Ron Miller - My Future Plans

My Future Plans

Author's note: Many of you have asked about my future plans regarding another run for public office, and I've tried to answer your questions as honestly as I can at this stage of the deliberation and planning process. A recent inquiry from a member of the press led me to the decision to provide you, the people who have given me your trust and support, with as much information as I can about my intentions so you'll know where I stand. That is the genesis of this post. Thanks for your time and attention!

"Are you going to run again?"

The short answer to that question is "yes."

If I believed our elected officials genuinely served the people before themselves, I would be quite content to return to the life I had before I announced my first run for public office on February 28, 2006.

We still, however, do not have a government that is open and transparent so nothing is hidden from us. We still do not have a government that spends our tax dollars wisely and delivers the results promised to us. We still do not have a government that respects our right to self-determination and trusts us to make sound decisions for ourselves and our neighbors. We still do not have a government that puts problem solving before party politics. We still do not have a government that has empathy for what families go through to make a living today and build a life for tomorrow. We still do not have a government that understands the fate of the family determines the fate of the nation.

Can one person or a few people change our government? I know with absolute certainty that nothing will change if no one tries. Don't forget that earlier this year, we here in Maryland witnessed with the passage of Jessica's Law the power a small group of dedicated individuals can wield over the entrenched political bosses. A dedicated organization of children's advocates mobilized an entire state and reversed the course of an initially hostile legislature, winning a nearly unanimous vote to protect our children from sexual predators. There is no better example I can think of to illustrate what a few people can do to effect positive change in our government.

Am I the one person who can bring about this change? I'm one of many people, including you, that can do great things together. That's why we are called "Team Ron Miller." I want to be the one that carries your message and speaks truth to power, calling for the relationship between government and its people to change so our elected officials serve at the pleasure of the electorate as our nation's founders intended. I offer you a heart for service to others and a sense of purpose in giving my time, talent and treasure to a cause greater than my own enrichment or comfort.

I also know why I came late in life to the political arena, even though it was not my plan. It was so I could fully understand the triumphs and trials of raising a family and living in community with others, and adopt the concerns and hopes of the people as my own. My passion for citizen-centered government is authentic because I do not come from the political elite but rather from the people. I am running because your dreams are my dreams, too.

"When are you going to run?"

I will not run for public office in 2008. Neither my family nor my finances are prepared for another challenger campaign so soon after the last one. I still need to retire my debt from the last campaign and build a war chest for the next one. That said, I will not be silent in 2008. I will continue to write and speak out on issues that are important to the people of Maryland, and I will be actively involved in electing a Republican to the White House in 2008.

I am targeting 2010 as the next potential opportunity for me to seek public office again. Even that date, however, is contingent on raising enough money to retire my current campaign debt and conduct a lean yet viable campaign without assuming additional personal debt. I must also set aside enough personal funds to allow me to take a leave of absence from my job and campaign full-time in the latter stages of the campaign. I owe it to my family to pursue my calling in a way that honors them.

Last year was a leap of faith that broke me out of my comfort zone. For the next time, we will plan better, start earlier and run smarter than before. If I am able to satisfy the financial conditions I outlined, my opponent in 2010 will face a better prepared, wiser and more formidable candidate - I promise you that.

"What office are you running for?"

I haven't made a formal commitment to run for a particular office and there's no reason for me to do so right now. I can tell you that we are using last year's campaign as our benchmark for planning purposes, so the District 27 Maryland Senate seat is on the table. I'm not dismissing anything at this point, however, because a lot can happen in the next two years. I've received many suggestions from my supporters as to which offices I should pursue, and some of them would surprise you. I'm honestly grateful for their suggestions if for no other reason than they reflect a healthy confidence in my abilities (smile)!

I also don't want to repeat the events of last year where I announced for one office and changed course in mid-stream at the request of my party and my governor, Bob Ehrlich. I'm the child of a veteran and a nine-year veteran myself; when the commander calls on you, you salute smartly and report for duty, and that's what I did. While the reasons for the change were legitimate and practical from my point of view, the casual observer didn't read my explanation in the news reports or our campaign communications. To them, the change appeared indecisive at best and opportunistic at worst. The fact is that it was neither, but I'd rather be patient and evaluate the situation fully at the right time so the decision I make is the right one - and the only one.

About Team Ron Miller

Team Ron Miller is the continuing campaign committee established by Ron Miller of Huntingtown, Maryland to promote transformation in Maryland politics. The goals of Team Ron Miller are to:
  • Restore the proper relationship of government to the people so that it serves them, not the other way around.
  • Reenergize the two-party system in Maryland to give the voters real choices.
  • Establish a model 21st century government that is responsive, efficient and effective.
  • Promote full transparency and accountability from our elected officials.
  • Demand results from government over rhetoric and vote for change when it doesn't deliver.
  • Let government do what only it can do and otherwise empower the people to do the rest.
  • Keep as much money in the hands of the people as possible so the economy grows rather than the government.
  • Remind our elected officials that every decision they make affects real people who are working hard every day to make a living and build a life.

As much as I would like to see people such as yourself involved directly in Politics, I fear that any attempt at changing Maryland would at this point be a waste of time.
I strongly suggest you consider moving from this state and running in a state where your voice and your vision could be of value.
Maryland is a sinking ship and I honestly believe that the holes are to large to shore up.

I personally will only be here until my wife retires, at which point I have full intention to move from Maryland and seek retirement in America.,, I mean another state.

I'm hoping by the time Miller's run comes around MDers will be fed up with being taxed into poverty.

you just dont get it do you.
all counties in Maryland work to support the lazy residents of PG county and Baltimore city. The only two voting blocks needed to win in the state. Its not going to change.
Been that way for the last 40 years. and now, the dems are positioning themselves to allow the illegals to vote. If you cant ask for ID you cant deny them the "right" to vote.

Maryland sucks, so much in fact that we have already set up our retirement accounts in an out of state bank.

No, I do get it but, I’m an optimist (for the most part). But, this doesn’t explain how Ehrlich got elected into the Maryland House of Delegates representing Baltimore County, a seat in the House representing Hartford, Anna Arundel and Baltimore counties and parts of Baltimore City, and as governor of Maryland. The ONLY reason Ehrlich lost his second bid for governor is he supported Bush. It is possible to happen again.

We can only hope MDers will begin to see past their liberal tendencies when their paychecks are getting smaller and everything in MD is going down the toilet. But, given the going trend of hatred toward anything Republican, I’m with you, it’s not looking good.

Miller needs a good message of ideas. Now that the Bush tenure is coming to an end, democrats can't use that as a reason to not vote for someone.

you give the maryland democrat too much credit. You assume that they are able to look past the D at the end of the name.

Maryland is lost. Now all we can do is focus on the country and put our efforts into no losing it completely also.

The good politicians need to be running at a national level and forget this state as quickly as they can.

Well, I figure it this way, either stand up as a conservative and keep going after the failures of these liberals or leave the state. As of now I intend to leave the state within the next 5 years. I am tired of fighting the battle of growing crime, higher taxes, increasing congestion, and crappy schools. If the trend continues I will leave sooner. Are you a MDer? What are your plans?

I grew up in College Park. What a great place when I was a kid. Now it's the MD crime center. It's the top reason we moved to SOMD.

We both feel the same except I do hold a little hope. Very little. Looks like DE is the place for us.

I got my drivers license at the DMV that used to be in college park. (now gone.)
I grew up in the Anne Arundel side of Laurel.

remember how nice laurel was before the mall went in back in the 60s?
or, did you ever make the trip through the woods in the winter to skate on that little blob of water now known as laurel lake?

we were at laurel lake one year, sitting around drinking some beer. One of the guys got the idea to drive his VW Bug out onto the ice and play around, so he did.
then, another guy there decided that it would be fun to take his dads Eldorado out there on the ice too. He wouldnt listen to our lecture on the difference in weight between the two.
That car never even tried to get up on the ice, he just drove right on through and into the water.
I laughed my ass off for hours playing that one back in my head.
