| Ann Coulter: Marketing Genius? "She has referred to Sept. 11 widows as "self-obsessed women" who are "enjoying their husbands' deaths," and has even admitted that she wished Timothy McVeigh had bombed The New York Times building instead of the one in Oklahoma City. Late last week, conservative pundit Ann Coulter landed herself in national headlines, yet again, after an appearance on CNBC's "The Big Idea," where she said she thought the world would be better if everyone were Christian." Many people, upon listening to the words of the 9/11 widows felt like they were playing politics and enjoying the 'coolness' of their celebrity than any actual conviction or principle. Many people see the NY Times as more of a bad thing for the US than the Murrah building, And, well, there is an awful lot of Christians in this nation who read their bibles. Passing it off as some sort of magic or genius is just a way to not have to discuss what she is saying and why people are interested.

| Its a bit strange that ABC news put this article on their Entertainment page, her being a noted political pundit. |

| As I read the ABC piece, they are trying to paint her as calculating and greedy. In fact, as you say, she's being a critical observer of America. She's more like Michael Moore in that she pokes her finger in the eyes of her opponents by rubbing their noses in their stupidity (is that too many analogies in one sentence?)

| They start off the article misrepresenting the whole Jersey widow thing - and I'm supposed to take it seriously? I look at Ann's articles as more or less political comedy, with a hint of political truth in it. Sometimes she says things others agree with but in the rudest, most obtuse and tactless way possible - but sometimes she's still right at the bottom of it all. I imagine if she were at the dinner table with some of my liberal relatives, part of me would be covering my eyes, and part of me would be peeking to see their reaction. She's the kind of person that not ONLY says the Emperor has no clothes, but goes on to comment on his private unmentionables. It really IS entertainment. Which is why when she once again says something outrageous, I neither feel any compulsion to defend her or feel any need to distance myself from her. But the Jersey widow thing? I can't fault her for that. It's been taken out of context so far as to stretch the limits of credulity. She commented on the fact that these women have managed to create a six year CAREER out of being widows - women who hitherto had virtually zero fame or recognition, and whose only raison d'etre seems to be that their husbands died on 9/11, like so many others. They've managed to parlay that into some kind of political career and have engaged in areas that honestly have nothing to do with security, terrorism or anything else to do with 9/11. They have instant face recognition in most of New York. Personally, if I'd lost someone on 9/11 and felt the need for poltical activism, I'd eschew rock star status. It would be as though Cindy Sheehan started gaining popularity AS a rock star. You'd be forced to say, damn she's sure "enjoying" her son's death a little dontcha think? So Ann says this about the Jersey widows. She ALSO comments on an even more salient point - that Democrats are famous for trotting out victims in such a fashion as to make it UNTHINKABLE to oppose their view in public, in a shameless display of bathos. Bring out a mother crying "Bush why did you kill my son"? and you win political points, because no one is going to say "that's a load of crap". I give Ann credit for calling a spade a spade in that situation. I hate it when politicians resort to trotting out children and victims and widows in an emotional state so as to score points. No one with an ounce of sense can believe they're doing it for any other reason. |

| Not strange... ...at all. ABC is among the folks who would rather discuss her business acumen than her points.

| This is very similar to the Rush Limbaugh flap. Ann Coulter is frequently misquoted and her words are twisted to give them the most offensive possible meaning. I actually read her columns and watch her TV appearances, unlike the liberals who lose their minds over what they think she said, so when Ann becomes a big headline, I laugh at the Left and their transparent attempts at slander. AND I love how the oh so tolerant Left, those free speech defenders, are always calling for Ann to be silenced. |
