Commercial nuclear power has never caused a fatality in this country.
There have been non-nuclear power plant nuclear accidents whihc have resulted in deaths, but the US nuclear power industry has not resulted in one death and is properly regulated. So I agree.

And on the last point, yes, I am pro nuclear power. It is one of the very few things I agree with Bush on. Too bad he doesn't seem to have followed through on his building new nuclear power plants plan.

I was watching John Edwards recently and when asked about global warming and reliance on foreign oil, he said the solution was bio fuels and definitely no new nuclear power plants.
The fricken idiot!! Bio fuels are decades away before they start to replace fossil fuels at a significant level (I think it took Brazil even longer), but nuclear in massive amounts could be in place in ten years. If the Carbon Dioxide emissions are truly so bad, then nuclear makes the most sense.
Ok I'll split hairs with you .......... how far did the Leukemia and Cancer rates go up in Dauphin County PA ? How many Farmers lost livestock to radiation poisoning ?

may more, maybe less .............. according to Uni Of Pitt. there has been not increase in cancer rates since March 1979

the only real reason I would be against Nuclear Power:
Quote:

“Signals available to the operator failed to show that the valve was still open… In addition, there was no clear signal that the pilot-operated relief valve was open.”

Because TMI had been falsifying reactor leak rates to the NRC in the weeks leading to the accident, operators had learned to ignore the most obvious sign that the PORV had stuck open and that coolant was being lost through this pathway. The high temperature reading at the PORV drain line was a clear indication that coolant was escaping. But, operators had become accustomed to this anomaly because of the criminal falsification which allowed this condition to exist for several weeks.

“Helicopters hired by TMI's owner, General Public Utilities Nuclear, and the Department of Energy were sampling radioactivity in the atmosphere above the plant by midday. A team from the Brookhaven National Laboratory was also sent to assist in radiation monitoring.”

By mid-morning, citizens (many who had not heard about the accident) were reporting a metallic taste in their mouths. Because the reactor had been leaking for several weeks, the reactor drain tank was full and a pathway to the environs had already been created by valves aligned to handle the leaking coolant and facilitate the falsification of the leak rates. Additionally, at the time of the accident, GPU reported that radiation monitors went off-scale, filters were clogged and other monitoring devices “disappeared.” Therefore, we do not know how much radiation escaped undetected into the atmosphere. Still, the Columbia Study found increased cancer incidence, including lung cancer, from 1975-1985.

NRC’s Fact Sheet on the TMI Accident

Nuclear Reactors are run by companies trying to make a profit, that will lie cheat and murder (See Kerr-McGee, Defective Fuel Rods, and Karen Silkwood) to keep plants running, get tax breaks ( see TMI Operators falsifying reports)

Quote:
At the time of the incident Unit 2 had been operation for less than 3 months. In its short lie Unit 2 had already experienced a number of breakdowns. But MetEd had great incentive to hurry: putting the reactor online in 1978, rather than the new year of 1979, gave the owner GPU, important tax breaks. Thus when Unit 2 came on steam Dec 30 1978, GPU saved 40 mil in tax benefits and qualified for a rate increase of nearly $ 50 Million.
Capitalism is a grand thing, but not where Nuclear Power Concerned IMHO.
