Another Democrat Hates Free Speech................

Another Democrat Hates Free Speech

State Senator Moe Keller (D-Jefferson, Colorado) has introduced a bill, SB 48, that would outlaw the right of citizens to use the telephone to alert their fellows to actions taking place in the Legislature! Unless you, the citizen, had “a prior relationship” with people being contacted, it would be illegal. That’s right, general citizen alerts are specifically verboten. And one wonders how Mr. Keller would have viewed the midnight ride of Paul Revere.

This obscene measure is justified on the thin reed of convenience. You see, people are “inconvenienced” when they receive a call about an issue. So, to relieve them of the burden of telling the caller they are not interested or simply hanging up, Senator Keller has decided to impale free speech rights on the spear of criminalization. Regardless of how that may “inconvenience” the Constitution.

I don't see why anyone would object to a law against unsolicited phone calls. Anyone who wants the calls is free to establish the "prior relationship" and receive calls.

I say they should also outlaw the calls from the Presidential candidates, or at least make them put a live person on the other end to hear me tell them to f#$% off.

So, what would be the impact of the Keller dictate? Why get exercised about it? The impact is simple: Citizens, voters in Senator Keller’s district, will not learn what is going on except from an increasingly biased press or, of course, from Senator Keller, himself. It’s really a political application of what Hollywood calls the “Golwyn Maxim”: “When I want your opinion, I’ll give it to you.”

Independent views or reports to the public about tax hikes, spending sprees, handouts to special interests, the appointment of friends and cronies to government positions, etc, will no longer be tolerated. Only Senator Keller and the captive media will have the legal right to inform you. And the ability of citizens to express their views will be greatly diminished -- all in the abstract name of a wholly contrived “inconvenience.”

Hmm so is this Socialist of Fascist ..........

Ah don't have a home phone .......... but I see this as a bit more serious that getting annoyed during dinner by a phone call telling me what the wags in congress are doing in case something like the Bush 1.4 billion to Mexican't goes 5 months with out someone noticing ........

Seems like McPain-Feingold Censorship.

notice how it only restricts free speech ..... so i guess I could run a free reversed Dial a Slut Service and have my girls call and talking Sex and that would just be Free Speech and Business ..........

But every single person who wants to receive that type of phone call would still be able to. Every one.

This will only stop people from making unsolicited calls. If you want to recieve this type of call, by all means sign up. I don't want to, so I won't.

Do you really consider an anonymous phone call from someone you don't know to be a good way to learn about legislative issues? Anyone that would rely on that to know what is going on sort of deserves to be uninformed, don't they?

Ok Point ..... You would be getting News with a Spin, and I guess if your already signed up with a political party or on someones mailing list, then they can include a "by signing up for the mailing list in support of MR X for Congress, you agree in advance to any and all phone calls"

but it still seems like the congress critter is trying to hide something ...... it no big deal, then why restrict it ........
