Flat earth society...

I was musing this morning while on the throne about Algore and his religion of man made global warming and my thoughts moved to other similar things in human history; Everything revolving around the earth, flat earth, human sacrifice to appease the Gods, endless religions meant to address the unknown and unknowable, from tidal waves to eclipses to drought, earthquakes, storms, plague, infertility, lost crops, a missed shot at a buffalo, and so forth and the common thread is mankind's desire for reason, even it's unreasonable. Maybe 'reason' isn't the right word, maybe it's 'explanation' or 'blame'?

In any event, I envisioned Algore in Inca or Aztec head dress and garb, standing on a temple, holding up in his arms as an offering to the sun some dying soccer mom with her heart cut out and her SUV being torn apart by the mob at the base of the temple and it dawned on me that Al and his shtick are nothing new and certainly not some unheard of historical mental condition.

What fascinated me about the idea was that the Inca's and the Aztec's, while Gore-esque in assigning who is to be punished, at least understood, 1,000's of years ago, that the sun was responsible.

Alanis Morrisette, not everything in your diary is a song.

...simply a sign of an amateur. ANYTHING can be a song if you just have enough imagination.

(and flexible expecations)

Not new at all. Humans are so arrogant and they think everything revolves around them because they're oh so important. It was the same with the ancient Greeks and Romans, the Incas and Aztecs, and now "modern" man (who has the same crazy beliefs that their caveman ancestors did).

And they didn't understand that the sun was responsible - they thought it was the Sun God, like all the other whimsical gods who had it in for them and had nothing better to do than worry about a particular person's crops. Gore and his ilk are just a modern day version.

We are a generation that grew up with pictures of the earth wearing a smilie or frownie face, like it's a human with feelings. Smokey the Bear. Woodsy Owl. The whole thing is ludicrous and will make our descendants laugh hysterically (while they're engaging in their own worship of whatever god they've dreamed up).

...it just really hit me very clearly this morning. The vision of Hi Priest Gore in his robes, bloody hands, making his offering, his disciples on their knees, hopeful, intense with anticipation...then he ends the ceremony, jumps in his jet and off to do the the next show thinking to himself "Good thing for me them idiots will believe anything...I wonder if this is what Elvis felt like, to be worshipped thus?"
