Where is the outrage over this statement? I haven't heard any calls for Obama to apologize or withdraw his candidacy over this statement. Has he come out to explain what he meant by this yet?

Oh, I forgot, he is representing the party of tolerance and inclusion so it's ok for him to make statements like this.

Like most political statements, people will hear what they want to hear. Doocy heard that Obama was making a broad generalization that a typical white grandmother is someone who's afraid of blacks and uses racial slurs and disagreed, Carlson heard Obama trying to deflect attention away from Rev. Wright. Kilmeade and Wallace heard him saying that it is typical of whites of that era to feel that way.

Personally, I agree with the later view as my parents and grandparents were the same way. My grandparents were always harping about how the darkies were over-running and ruining their community, the first time a black family moved into our neighborhood in the 70s, my dad loaded up his shotgun and moved it from his bedroom wall to the front door closet... just to be ready for when "that colored fellow" tried to break into the house. And just two weeks ago my mother was telling my daughter how happy she was that she was in a neighborhood with no blacks and how the blacks had overrun her old neighborhood and ruined it all. So to Kilmeade's point, I agree that the comment isn't so much racial, but more generational. As I've written before, when my grandfather was growing up, if a black kid came into your neighborhhood you would shoot at him. When my dad was growing up you would beat the kid up. When I was growing up we largely ignored them, and my kids played with them. So each generation has it's own view of a racial norm, and the view of folks who grew up in the 1920s through 1940s is wildly different than what folks like Doocy and I, who grew up in the 60s and 70s have. So I don't see that what Obama said was wrong. I think a dislike/distrust of blacks by whites who are of that era is typical.

Doocy couldn't handle it and tossed out a lot of needling comments. Carlson did what she always does... nothing. Kilmeade sounded thrilled with the idea and even thanked Wallace for showing them the courtesy of airing out his concern on the air instead of just writing it in an email.

I thought it was a really cool thing for Wallace to do, and I hope that other media outlets will encourage their hosts to toss the BS flag every now and again when someone is going off on a rant, aka Kieth Olbermann.

It'll be interesting seeing the Righties try to keep this controversy fired up through November. It's already quite obvious that they're deliberately trying to keep it simmering...and it's only March.

They've probably got a team assigned to track down any member of the church who might have said something stupid. Or a cook at Obama's favorite restaurant. Or a ticket agent at an airport...

So much for the idea that Fox is this bastion of right-wing groupthink, eh?

I enjoy it when they have different opinions on the same story - it broadens my horizons and gives me another POV. Just like on here, where intelligent people (uh, most of us anyway ) can debate a topic reasonably.

You can have total faith in the Republican party to again overplay their hand the way they always do when we try to play the race card. I can't help but think of the scene in A Few Good Men when Demi Moore goes on a rant about the doctor, and gets ripped afterwards... "You object once so they can hear you say he's not a criminologist. You keep after it and it looks like just a bunch of fancy lawyer tricks." In this case we should bring the issue up enough to get it into public awareness, then back off and let people keep the mental picture of Obama and Wright as racists. But no... many have to "vehamently object" and "strenuously object" and before you know it you start having the opposite effect by causing blacks and white to see the attacks as unfair, to start defending black churches as a whole, and voila... it'll be the Republicans being labled as racists. We do this to ourselves every damn time.

Hope not. It'll have more effect if they pretty much let it sit until then. If they keep at it, it'll be like Kerry whining about the Swift Boats. It will have the opposite effect.

But if you leave it alone, some voters will just assume that that's how Barack feels, and it'll be there for the next six or seven months.

And that was a point that Wallace was making, and he's right. He also brought up the O'Reilly/Rivera dust-up over immigration as another example of how FNC isn't as prone to groupthink as some like to make them out to be.
