| McCain... ...has opened himself up to more questions than this add answers, so, it's a bad add. I mean, what is an American and what is an American president? The last way I'd answer that question is by dragging Vietnam into the conversation. Vietnam will forever be a divisive event to Americans. Some Americans think it was a good war. Some think a terrible war. Some think the idea was good, but the execution not so much. Some think it was a terrible idea that served a terrible purpose of simply feeding the newly coined military industrial complex. In any analysis it was a profoundly divisive time in American history. On top of that, for McCain to invoke a plea to 'stick together, to never yield, to never quit' in context of Vietnam is absurd as that is exactly opposite of what Americans did; We did not stick together, we did yield, we did quit. We lost. We left behind, unaccounted for, some 2,500 of McCain's comrades in arms and their '#'. And on top of that, McCain has fully identified himself with Iraq which, at present, is seen by some Americans as a good war, others a terrible war, some a a good idea, but the execution not so much and others think it is a terrible idea that serves a terrible purpose that has transformed from indicting the military industrial complex to the modern form of corporations in general and oil in particular. I supported Bush 43 twice and I will always regret it because it is my view that he did not focus on being an American president; he has focused on being some sort of World President. Should I have known better? I really don't know. He ran a big state well, by most accounts, and got along with many members of the Democrat party to get things to run well. The quintessential American President of our lifetime, Ronald Reagan ran a big state well and got along with the other guys pretty well also. That was my frame of reference. Whatever influences were involved when they both became President, George Bush has lost his people and, I think, his nation in a Johnson and Nixon esque global view that is not an American centric, America first ideology. Ronald Reagan dealt with serious economic recession, the post Vietnam emboldened global threats of communism and a people depressed and unsure of the future by dealing with all those issues head on by focusing on the US, without ensnaring us in foreign complications and war, without focusing on the problems of other nations and without alienating and dividing us as a people. When 220 US Marines died in an instant, Reagan could have embroiled us in a war that was not our business. Instead, he swallowed our national pride and did not compound a mistake. Like him or not, he was the American president to everyone. McCain's focus on our latest foreign entanglement mess is not a focus on America or Americans. This add does not give comfort to the idea of America unless you liked Vietnam and Iraq and wish we would have become embroiled in Lebanon. Bad add in my view.

| I also voted for Bush 43 twice. I regret many things he has done. You have stated a few of them Larry, but given those same choices at the time I would still have voted for him against Gore or John Kerry, because at the time he was the best choice. We now face a choice of voting for Mccain who is a bad candidate ,IMO ,and Obama or Hillary who are even worse candidates. It isnt going to be easy to go to the polls this year and vote Mccain, but there is no friggin way I can go there and vote for the two Socialists he is running against. Having voted in elections for 40 years this is one I wish I could stay home for. |

...but what I wish I had done was raise hell at the time. Write my congressman. Bush let this thing unravel over time. The White house seemed to stand in quicksand as Iraq and Afghanistan unraveled, in slow motion, over the last 6 years. I hate it when the other side cheer leads. That's what I am guilty of. That's what a GOP dominated congress did.

| Well... ...this is why we're supposed to have principles, something to hold to when the pressure is on. That's a tough thing to do and that was one of the great things about Reagan. Maybe a byproduct of being older and wiser when he took office? I wish I felt that way about McCain.

| Maybe... ...that is the proper mindset to have; lowered expectations. A President can never address a decent fraction of what he/she promises during the campaign. I'd be happy if they just get the few big ones they'll face right.

| Yeh, but McCain is not a natural born president. He wasn't born in the United States. The Constitution specifies that the president can only be someone who's a natural born citizen, and he definitely wasn't born in the United States. Natural-born citizen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
