Michelle Obama woos crowd at CMU

"A wobbly microphone stand turned out to be a blessing for Michelle Obama.

After fiddling with it for half a minute, trying to keep it upright, she popped the microphone out of the stand and stepped to her right.

"There we go," she said, the modest feat eliciting raucous cheers from about 1,500 people who'd come to a Carnegie Mellon University gym to hear her speak.

Untethered from the podium, Sen. Barack Obama's wife swung her attention between sections of the crowd, working them from frenzied cheers to silence, and back again. It's a reaction more often associated with her husband -- the Democratic presidential candidate -- but she's seen it before.

The Harvard-educated attorney, former hospital executive and mother of two needed no notes for her stump speech, an hourlong ode to the working class she's delivered dozens of times."

I think it's wonderful that Michelle Obama can memorize a script. She could be like Julia Roberts or something. And it's equally wonderful that a bunch of college children find her intelligent and thought-provoking.

I find it funny when people who live in Million dollar mansions always want to claim they are for the working class.

Why an "Ode to the Working Class" at Carnegie Melon??

I feel confident that many of those in attendance probably DON'T come from middle class or lower class families.

They don't, but it makes them feel all warm and fuzzy to rally 'round the poor and downtrodden. "Look, Muffy! Poor people!" "Oh, Biff, we should offer to buy them a half-caf cinnamon dolce frappuccino!"
