Voter ID battle shifts to proof of citizenship...

Voter ID battle in U.S. shifts to proof of citizenship

"The battle over voting rights will expand this week as lawmakers in Missouri are expected to support a proposed constitutional amendment to enable election officials to require proof of citizenship from anyone registering to vote.

The measure would allow far more rigorous demands than the voter ID requirement recently upheld by the Supreme Court, in which voters had to prove their identity with a government-issued card.

Sponsors of the amendment — which requires the approval of voters to go into effect, possibly in an August referendum — say it is part of an effort to prevent illegal immigrants from affecting the political process. Critics say the measure could lead to the disenfranchisement of tens of thousands of legal residents who would find it difficult to prove their citizenship."

I don't understand why there would be such a flap about having to show ID when you vote or prove you're a citizen. Someone please explain this to me.

Thousands of people in FL are to stupid to use a simple punch card. They would be disenfranchised by the requirement to get down to the MVA and get an ID

There's an editorial in the NYTimes today (the above piece is actually a NYTimes writer/article reprinted in the ITH) about this article. Of course, the leftist spin is that this is just another Republican way to disenfranchise voters.

It's a bogus claim - anyone born in the US can contact the Bureau of Statistics (or whatever the dept. is called in their state) and obtain a birth certificate if they don't have one. YES, there are a few exceptions to the rule, as with everything. But overall, the majority of the people who are born here have a record of their birth.

The onus should be on the VOTER to prove they qualify to vote - as there is no constitutional RIGHT to vote (in federal elections) automatically with no restrictions. States have the right to set their own laws (qualifications)- as long as they don't interfere/conflict with the US Constitution.

One side of the aisle gets a great number of its votes from non-citizens.

That's obvious, and that side of the aisle also gets a great number of votes from homeless people drug to the polls with promises of food and cigarettes. But they can't say that, so I'm curious what the official explanation is. (So we can have a discussion about whether homeless people and illegals have a "right" to vote.)

The objections that I've heard to these laws (which seem pretty common sense to me), is that it makes it too hard to vote. Bru posted about a group of nuns who couldn't vote in Indiana's primary, even given the long lead time and high news coverage that they'd need ID. Then, they declined the ten day extension because a week and a half was not enough time to run down to their version of the MVA and get a state ID. Georgia actually GIVES AWAY for free ID's to people who can show they can't afford one (for this type of law), but it was still challenged as being too cumbersome to get.

It really boils down to Democrats wanting people to vote who should not be able to (illegal aliens, dead people, etc), and Republicans wanting a fair fight.
