Source: Huckabee Tops McCain's Veep List

"Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and defeated contender for the GOP presidential nomination, is currently at the top of John McCain's short list for a running mate. At least that's the word from a top McCain fundraiser and longtime Republican moneyman who has spoken to McCain's inner circle. The fundraiser is less than thrilled with the idea of Huckabee as the vice presidential nominee, and many economic conservatives—turned off by the populist tone of Huckabee's campaign and his tax record as governor—are likely to share that marked lack of enthusiasm. But here is the logic of picking Huckabee:"

Yeah...

...the Huckabee e mail machine has been cranking back up of late, so, this has been coming.

Here's the thing; McCain's path to victory has nothing to do with stubborn traditional conservatives. He's not going to get us. Ever. We don't see him winning as good for the country and a veep nominee isn't going to change that.

Winning for him has everything to do with moderates. So, for every religious conservative Huckabee pulls in, what about the moderates who are turned off by religious fundamentalism? He has no base to work from so, there is no base to shore up. He's already losing his natural constituency, the media, so, he may as well keep doing what's worked for him so far, appealing to moderates. I think he'd look hard at Liebermann or maybe Hutchinson or Mike Steele.

What do I know?

Yea, Steele would be an awesome choice. He is one of the most sound-minded conservatives out there.

As a moderate I will NOT vote for McCain if Huckabee is his running mate.

As a conservative who is turned off by religious fundementalism, Huck is a deal breaker. I could never vote for that ticket.

There are only two real reasons that Huckabee is at the top of McCain's list, and they are not the ones mentioned in the article.

1. Huckabee is unemployed at the moment and has nothing else to do.
2. Everybody better has said "no".

McCain made a major effort to get Romney on the ticket and he passed, so this whole "name/image" thing is bogus. Guliani is as much a RINO as McCain is, and the rest of the pack are too unknown to pick.

LOL RINO is a Republican In Name Only, meaning the person has an (R) after their name but stands for little or nothing that Republicans stand for.
