McCain's Age Seen As Major Problem For Voters.....

McCain's Age Again Seen As Major Problem For Voters

"Yet another poll, this one by the Washington Post and ABC News, has found that Sen. John McCain's age appears to be a major hang-up for voters, far more so than Sen. Barack Obama's race. From ABC's write up:

Age continues to look like a major hurdle for McCain. Thirty-nine percent of Americans say they'd be uncomfortable with a president first taking office at age 72, far more than say they'd be uncomfortable with a woman (16 percent) or African-American (12 percent) as president."

Those polls are funny.
If you showed somebody a pic of Cindy and then asked if you thought the guy who was knocking the bottom out of her could handle the stress of being president, I'll bet you get different results.

I see McCain's age as a huge positive if he plays it right. If his Veep choice is good, I'll vote for him because I see no way he makes four years.

A vote for McCain could be a vote for President Rice!

I would agree with you on that... and that he could use his age as effectively as Reagan did. But on the other side of that argument is McCain's performance on the campaign trail of late. It hasn't been getting a lot of media attention, but he's been making a lot of gaffes that Joe Lieberman has been giving him cover on. He's been confusing things, getting things wrong, etc. It may or may not be because of his age, my mom is pretty damn sharp at 75, but it plays into the stereotype.

Yep. People only notice the senile old farts that screw up. There's no reason to notice an older person who still has their mental faculties.

The other flaw with my assumption is that his mother is still alive, so he may also live a lot longer.

I don't think that people are worried about his dropping over dead in the Oval Offfice, I think what they are worried about is the infirmaties of people in their 70s. My mom remembers fine details of events that happened when she was in the first grade, and I remember them as well because she forgets that she has told them to me 100 times. I know before I go to visit her just about everything we're going to talk about because she forgets that she's already told me things over the phone. I just nod, smile, and be the good son.

Someone in their 70s just isn't going to have the mental abilities of someone 10, 20, 30 years, etc. younger, and McCain is showing that more and more on the campaign trail.

As for younger people, yes they make mistakes too, but once corrected they usually aren't repeated. McCain has repeatedly goofed up Shias and Sunnis, and the corrections don't seem to be taking a hold on him.

McCain's age is the least of his bad qualities.

That's true bit it's the most visible bad quality since he is busy trying to camoflauge himself as a conservative.
