Pastor who backed McCain apologizes for remarks

"SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - A Texas evangelical leader who endorsed Republican presidential candidate John McCain earlier this year has apologized for anti-Catholic remarks that angered Church members and embarrassed McCain's campaign.

John Hagee, pastor of the 19,000-member Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, wrote a letter of apology to the Catholic League on Monday for comments in which he called the Church "apostate" and likened it to the "great whore" in a passage of the Bible.

Hagee's comments, which circulated on the Internet, drew comparisons with the controversy surrounding Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama over statements by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

McCain, who accepted Hagee's endorsement before the Texas primary in March, had faced a call by Catholic League President William Donohue to repudiate the pastor, who, he said, had "a history of denigrating the Catholic religion."

Hagee said in the letter to Donohue made public on Tuesday that he now had an "improved understanding of the Catholic Church" and expressed his "deep regret" for any comments Catholics had found hurtful."

He apologized when he made those remarks about Hurricane Katrina. Then, he turned around and made those statements again.

And the Democrat responce that I heard last night was (as expected) "It is not enough for Hagee to apologize for his remarks or for McCain to say he never supported them. McCain must reject the Hagee's support!"

This is all geared towards the hopes that if McCain does reject Hagee's support then all those thousands of Republicans who watch this guy will in turn reject McCain, and McCain needs all the evangelical support he can get. It's an ugly situation but one that he helped bring upon himself.

Stop it. The Democrats have been doing this ever since I can remember - it's not some brand new tactic that they just came up with in response to the Wright fiasco. Not to mention that McCain, as far as I'm aware, had nothing to do with the publicity surrounding Wright, and actually barely commented on it. That was Hillary's people running that around, not McCain.

So I fail to see how McCain "helped bring this upon himself" - please be so kind as to explain it to me.

Haven't you been reading, I have beat him with that for weeks.

He will say "Sean Hannity is the republicans #1 henchman and cohort of McCain. The republicans don't control the media per say but they work in tandem"

Unfortunately, that won't fly. With all the Fox haters out there who INSIST that NOBODY watches Faux News, that story not only grew legs and ran away, but made a star out of Wright. A big enough star that he is now a professional speaker instead of just a minister. It's unlikely that Sean Hannity accomplished all of this on his own.

As I keep saying, and you keep missing, the Democrats used to only attack national religious leaders like Falwell and Robertson, just as we attacked Sharpton, Jackson, and Calypso Louie. The smaller fish and loaves folks were never attacked by either side... until now. We opened the door with Wright and now the Democrats are going to coming through with plenty of others.

As for McCain, I would agree with your assessment as he made a point initially that he was not going to to discuss the Wright matter and that this was not an issue for the election. But... that didn't last long and McCain started referencing the Obama/Wright association in several of his press conferences, usually to try to deflect attention from the age issue or his goofing up of comments issues. Live by the sword, die by the sword!

Did you watch the election coverage on FNC from 9:00 to 10:00? There was Hannity gushing over those exit poll numbers that showed the fine folks from WVa had really bought into the Wright story, He was asking every guest on the show about them. "Hey did you see these numbers?" "These numbers are destroying Obama!" How pathetic that guy has become.
