What the hell is a "moderate"

Can somebody explain this term to me?

Is it supposed to be midway between liberal and conservative? What are "moderate" values? Do they even HAVE a common value set, or are they "moderate" on different items in relation to each other and/or at different times??

I'm curious because I just got called a "right wing religious nut" by a self described "moderate" while bs'ing at the coffee pot with some people.

I would describe it as just left or right of center. In other words: one who realizes pundits from both parties are inheirantly off their rocker.

...a 'moderate' tends to be someone who looks at a given issue, say, the war, and sees left and right fighting over it tooth and nail and doesn't like the rancor. Something tells them it's probably a good thing Saddam is dead and gone, but something else tells them that the cost in blood and money isn't so good. So, they're in the middle seeing validity in both arguments and fault in both.

Same thing on taxes, energy, social policies and so forth. They don't see issues in terms of winning or losing as the right and left do. They're look for that third way. Clinton was great at triangulating.

A less charitable view would be they have no principles.

There is no such thing as moderate in American Politics anymore. A moderate is the peson liberals say is conservatives and conservatives say is too liberal.
