Within your statement is both the question and the answer, the problem and the solution but you've got their relationship skewed, in my view. The PRIMARY problem with coming up with viable alternatives is the simple fact that we are nowhere near running out of oil, especially at $130 a freaking barrel. Point is, alternatives have a huge motivation at those prices, but no one is stupid enough to set up business models based on competing with $4 a gallon gas because they know damn well that there WILL be a fall in the price of oil and they are instantly out of business if they must have $4 a gallon to turn a profit.

Wanna be done with oil? Use it up. When Exxon and BP and Saudi and Iran and Mexico and Venezuela are rapidly diversifying away from oil, you'll know when we're actually running low.

My main concern is national economic security. Small business and working men and women are being failed by our government when basic energy costs are crazy like this.
