John Birch Society

What's so wacky about them? CW says they're a bunch of right-wing extremists, but nothing I've read about them suggests that. They are more Libertarian than anything, committed to fighting Communism and Totalitarianism.

Why is that a bad thing?

In my readings, the only people I've seen really criticize them are the usual pack of pinkos that also criticize Christians, embrace Castro and protest to have murderers set free.

So...anybody? Or are they like Pat Buchanan and Newt Gingrich - people we hate and fear because the media tells us to?

I don't mind Newt, but Pat Buchanan is on MSNBC all the time and he is effing psycho.

Very similar to the Contract With America, where the pinkos whine and faint about how horrible it is. Then you link to it and ask them to show you which part, exactly, they disagree with. And they shut up and start talking about something else.

So here's the JBS website:
The John Birch Society - Truth, Leadership, Freedom |

What do you disagree with and why?

I'm not really a huge fan of knee-jerks who revile something and can't tell you why - they've just heard it's bad, m'kay, and that's good enough for them.

I really don't know much about them other than hearing Dizzy Gillespie (jazz trumpeter) talk about when I saw him in concert years ago:

Quote:
In 1964, notable jazz trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie made a semi-satirical run for President, and formed chapters of the "John Birks Society" (his real name was John Birks Gillespie) in 25 states. Gillespie's politics, such as they were, were incompatible with the views of the John Birch Society: among his campaign pledges were to provide free universal health care and appoint Malcolm X as Attorney General.
John Birch Society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They seem to have quite a lot in common with Libertarians but I frankly haven't heard much about them lately.

See? The Socialists hate JBS. So that must mean they're a decent organization, right?

Just having a look-see through some of it's pages, I didn't see a lot that was real objectionable with the website. Overall, I mean. I didn't read a lot of the pieces all the way thru. There's an awful lot I can agree with as I skim over it. I looked at the speakers' bureau pages and the only name I really recognized was the Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson. He's been on Hannity's radio show as well as H & C. He's usually someone who's point of view I've agreed with when I've seen/heard him on the show.
