Congress frets as its ratings plummet

A recent Gallup Poll confirms what many lawmakers say they're hearing from their constituents: that confidence in Congress has never been lower. Only 12 percent of Americans say they have a "great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in Congress as an institution – the lowest level ever for any US institution since Gallup began asking the question 35 years ago. Congressional job approval, a slightly different question, has dropped to 18 percent.

"Not only does Congress have an approval rating below bubonic plague and head lice, I saw a recent poll that as many as 40 percent of people still believe that Congress is in Republican hands," says Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R) of Texas. "I wish we could get a little accuracy out there about who is in charge – and let those ratings fall where they may."

Pelosi and Reid are doing a wonderful job for their corporate sponsors.

I believe if the Democrats had a contest to pick the two lousiest people for the jobs of Speaker of the House and Senate Majority leader Pelosi and Reid would have won.

As a matter of fact maybe they did.

Molly Ball of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Senator Harry Reid's favorable rating in Nevada has "plunged dramatically," according to a new poll. Currently, Reid's favorable rating is at 32%, while his unfavorable rating is at 51%, a net 23-point drop from the last poll taken in early May when Reid scored a 46/42 favorable/unfavorable rating.

Ball reports this is the first time Reid's unfavorable rating has eclipsed his favorable rating. It also puts him below the favorable ratings recorded by President Bush and radio host Rush Limbaugh, among others.

Pollster Brad Coker of Mason-Dixon offered a wry observation of Reid and Limbaugh's similar ratings: "That's how polarizing Harry Reid has become. But Rush is trying to be polarizing. Reid just does it anyway."

At least a republican will not raise taxes. Thats the only control we have over tax and spending Congress.

You can discern a difference between the democratic party and the republican party???

I can't imagine how much scum and grease removal you had to do for that.

Big Issue = 2 - House solutions = 0

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi links the low ratings to Congress's inability to end the war in Iraq or deliver on promises to lower gas prices. "I think one of the reasons that Congress is at an all-time low in confidence with the American people is that we did not end the war – and these issues that relate to energy," .

Too bad we can't harvest the wind energy from this windbag Pelosi!!!

Kind of hard for Americans to approve the Congress' job when they've done damn close to nothing, and they've spent billions of dollars in doing so.
