And he didn't want THAT job either.

Step "down" or "up" - it's a term that sometimes is irrelevant when it comes to a job you like, or don't like. If the choice had been offered between the two, my gut reaction is that a general would much prefer SECDEF over *any* other position. I'd rather be head of the research department or IT than VP any day of the week.

I think that Powell just didn't want to work for Bush any longer. He also has no desire to run for office, so he wouldn't want to be Veep.

Colin Powell showed his moral courage when he tried to whitewash the incident at My Lai. It staretd his great rise toward being a general when he showed he could be used.
