I think that Powell just didn't want to work for Bush any longer. .
I think it's a simple as that. The internal battle between Powell/Cheney/Rumsfeld was allowed to get out of control. Powell lost. We've seen how well that's worked. Powell wasn't one of the true believers, so, by by.

Who will it be?

Powell? That would be good but not great.

Any better contenders out there?
Oprah

Or is she going to be Secretary of State?

I've heard that Obama's seriously considering keeping Gates in the job...at least initially.

I've also heard about Chuck Hagel and Richard Lugar being on the short list. Yep...Republicans.

...keeping Gates at least for the near terms would be a sensible, prudent decision.

It would also be an easy one politically because no ones head on the left spins around and hurls pea soup when you say "Secdef Gates".

Hagel and Lugar are not good choices. For anyone; too limited military backgrounds. In my opinion.

Clark would be a partisan pick and show Obama is as political as anyone and would not be a sign of hope and change.

I agree about Gates. Gates hasn't done anything that I can think of that suggests he should be replaced. Also, with the two wars going on (not to mention all of the under-the-radar stuff), continuity at that position is something everyone can support.

I haven't heard Clark's name mentioned for that spot by anyone "in the know"...but that doesn't mean a whole lot. He would obviously have that military experience that you mentioned as lacking with Luger and Hagel.

...but would be a 'politics as usual' pick. Like Rahm.

You're not going to get exactly what you want when it comes to Obama's cabinet and staff.

Gates should be a popular pick for everyone...if he's picked.

Lugar and Hagel would not be a "politics as usual" pick...but you wouldn't be happy with their level of military experience.

Clark is most certainly qualified in regards to military experience, but then you'd be upset because he's a Democrat.

I've been happy with Obama's picks for VP and COS. (Remember, a COS is there to get things done...not make the opposing party feel warm and fuzzy inside.) I trust Obama will make his decision on SECDEF based on who he honestly feels is the best man for the job.

Gates should be a popular pick for everyone...if he's picked. As I say, Gates makes sense.

Lugar and Hagel would not be a "politics as usual" pick...but you wouldn't be happy with their level of military experience. What is the case for Lugar or Hagel regardless of their party affiliation? I don't see it in either one of them

Clark is most certainly qualified in regards to military experience, but then you'd be upset because he's a Democrat. Nope. Bush upset me. From Obama, or any Dem, I'd expect it.

Rahm will not, for sure, make anyone on the right feel warm and fuzzy. Perhaps you'll make note of it when he goes too far and is too partisan?

There are other Republicans who disagree.

That said, if all the Republicans came out an enthusiastically endorsed Obama's pick of COS, then I'd be concerned.
