You are forgetting the biggest and best reason to pick Rahm. It really does make sense. Here, I'll walk you through it:

What is the first, biggest issue that Chairman Maobama needs to tackle? That's right, the economy.

What is the biggest cause of the economic "crisis?" That's right, Freddie and Fannie.

Who knows the problem better than a former Freddie board member who helped to create this whole mess?

Rahm helped create the mess that got the Chairman elected. Of course Maobama is going to reward him with this job.

Gates should be a popular pick for everyone...if he's picked.

Lugar and Hagel would not be a "politics as usual" pick...but you wouldn't be happy with their level of military experience.

Clark is most certainly qualified in regards to military experience, but then you'd be upset because he's a Democrat.

I've been happy with Obama's picks for VP and COS. (Remember, a COS is there to get things done...not make the opposing party feel warm and fuzzy inside.) I trust Obama will make his decision on SECDEF based on who he honestly feels is the best man for the job.
Weasley Clark has the experience all right , he almost started World War 3.

...nah. I don't think that matters. He was on the board in what, 2000 and 2001? That's not all that bad when the problems really got cooking in '02, '03 and '04.

I think one of his roles is that he is staunchly pro Israel. That's a big part of why he's there.

I don't know if it coincides with the confirmation of the new president elect, but the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) recently announced he intends to retire...
