Dems Are Trying To Pay Off Their Whores

U.S. bill seeks to rescue faltering newspapers

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With many U.S. newspapers struggling to survive, a Democratic senator on Tuesday introduced a bill to help them by allowing newspaper companies to restructure as nonprofits with a variety of tax breaks.

Cardin's Newspaper Revitalization Act would allow newspapers to operate as nonprofits for educational purposes under the U.S. tax code, giving them a similar status to public broadcasting companies.

Under this arrangement, newspapers would still be free to report on all issues, including political campaigns. But they would be prohibited from making political endorsements.
The bill will make them nonpartisan — like NPR! As if the newspaper industry wasn’t biased enough, now they are going to depend upon government largess to continue their existence. I’m sure their coverage will continue to be “fair and balanced”. Can we just call this the Newspaper Nationalization Act and be done with it?

Benjamin Cardin, Senator from MARYLAND. Guess he's all kerfluffled that the 2 Baltimore papers are not going to be around to spread the Liberal bias if they go out of business. If they did, he wouldn't be able to win any elections.

In December the Tribune Company, which owns a number of newspapers including The Baltimore Sun, The Chicago Tribune and The Los Angeles Times filed for bankruptcy protection.

First, I think the title of this discussion is insulting. Second, we know newspapers are sinking fast in the digital age...Problem is, it's taking the fact-finders and fact-checkers with it. Real journalists are hard to find on television and almost impossible on line. Oh, we've got opinionators by the gross, but not much else. I'm not sure Senator Cardin has the right answer, but I like the fact that he's suggested something. What's your idea?

I'm curious if this sets some sort of record for proposed blatant violations of the constitution?

My idea would be to let a business look at its income and expenses, cut expenses, look for ways to increase income and figure out how to attract capital if that is needed for major changes, new equipment, debt consolidation, etc, and stay in business. But there has to be a core business in there meaning the ability to produce a newspaper and get paid more than it cost.

I suspect that, like GM, they could make money just fine if they cut expenses, ie, huge labor and legacy costs. There are newspapers that make money, yes? There are car makers that make money, yes?

Find out why they are failing verse throw money at it which is typical of democratic leaders. And based on this past election, if main stream media doesn't want to ask hard questions of check facts, what makes you think a newspaper will.

When you only cater to half of your potential buyers you are only going to sell newspapers to the half you cater to.

Try reporting the news, Let the public make their own decision on what is right.
Kepp your bias's to yourself.

It's easy to figure out why they're failing. The internet.

Now, instead of paying for a newspaper, everyone goes to their website for free. And then you've got those who get their news from blogs that spin it from the truth to what they want to hear.

We see evidence of this everyday by Nonno, nhboy, BoyGenius, Mike, Imnomensa (got that right), wintersprings, chernmax and others.
