Maher salutes American troops

Quote:
I stopped watching Bill Maher a long time ago, and it’s moments like this that remind me why he’s a waste of broadcast air time. Maher complains that we need to bring home the troops from World War II by pulling out of Germany and Japan, and gives us this pithy little “salute” to American fighting forces:

Forget about bringing the troops home from Iraq. We need to get the troops home from World War II. Can anybody tell me why, in 2009, we still have more than 50,000 troops in Germany and 30,000 in Japan? At some point, these people are going to have to learn to rape themselves. [boos] I’ll ignore that.
Recall, if you will, when Maher claimed that the 9/11 terrorists had more courage than Air Force pilots and/or Navy commanders. “We have been the cowards. Lobbing cruise missiles from two thousand miles away. That’s cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building. Say what you want about it. Not cowardly. You’re right.” ABC cut ties with Maher after that statement, leading to his HBO show.

Sometimes I do wonder if we shouldn't bring troops home from Germany, England, etc.

That being said, Maher is an ass.

My issue with Maher regarding the 'cowardly' issue is that what he meant was that Bill Clinton was a coward for ordering a few missiles lobbed about rather than sending in some troops to do the job and get out.

However, once he said it, it dawned on him that he'd rather let people think he meant the troops as a whole, the people simply following orders, rather than his pal Bubba, who was responsible for making the decision.

Maher is the coward. He took a good show that had the courage to actually go after people who were being politically correct rather than intelligent and became just another partisan hack.

At some point, I believe something will come out about Maher which will explain why he is such a mean-spirited, hateful person. There is something really wrong with him.

His real father refuses to acknowledge him.

No, not sad; he made a decision. The fact of the matter is that in our world, at some point, you are selling a product and that product is whatever your sponsors think it is.

Look at Stern; He got stuck making fart jokes, debasing women and making fun of his own penis, for a living, every day, because that is what the sponsors came to expect; that is what he HAS to do. That is his shtick.

Maher, to truly be politically incorrect, would spend as much time pissing off the left as pissing off the right and that, while honorable to the claimed intent of the show, would be bothersome to sponsors. He had to make a choice, a business choice, and it is FAR easier in this world to choose to be more left than right if you wanna be thought of as kewl by the left.

I would so love a show that was truly fair and objective and would attack sacred cows, left, right and middle, based on a good argument rather than the pithy vapidity of Maher and, frankly, many of the right wing shows.

Maher is smart, no doubt about it in my mind and quick on his feet. In his later years he's turned into a political hack. Sometimes I do wonder why we keep so many troops overseas in places such as Germany and England.

I do not believe Maher made a choice, I believe that the split from ABC and the signing with HBO took off the limiter on what he always wanted to scream at the top of his lungs but ABC would not have tolerated it.

To satisfy our Wilsonian/neo conservative impulses, the ones that have gotten us in trouble and diserved the world since 'ol Woodrow decided there were higher purposes for a President than serving a mere Constitution.

My point was Maher decided it was in his interest to take a beating over the 'coward' comment rather than displease the Clinton chorus; they could get him work. The military could kiss his azz.
