U.S. Not a Christian, Jewish or Muslim Nation

"President Obama at Turkish Press Conference [04/06/09] explaining America's Separation of Church & State says the following: "America Is Not a Christian, Jewish or Muslim Nation"

Oh and he said this!!!

In Ankara, Turkey's capital, Obama told lawmakers their country can help ensure Muslims and the West listen to each other.

Obama has personal ties to Islam. His father was a Muslim Kenyan, and Obama lived as a child in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country. He told lawmakers that he knows Americans have been enriched by their country's Muslim heritage -- "I know, because I am one of them."

And your point? We are not a christian nation. Our founding fathers were very careful about that. For reason! We are suppose to have complete religious freedom including the right to have no religion.

You are correct. They wanted Roman Catholics, Congregationalists, Baptists, Anglicans, Deists, etc. to be able to openly voice their religious views.

Also though, to say that the Founders did not base much of their views from a Christian worldview, as well as an Enlightenment/Modernist worldview, is ignorance.

But, that still doesn't make us a Christian nation, because that would be a theocracy of some sort. We are a Representative Republic, or at least we use to be.

Agreed. That would be ignorance. Who said that?

I concur with this sentiment.

If America IS a Christian nation, it shouldn't be. People are Christians; governments cannot be. Even the best governmental body must, on occasion, be very UN-Christian to do what it exists to do.

And while the Founding Fathers may have been guided by Christian thinking, it's clear enough that what they wanted was *freedom* of religion. They'd had enough of state-run and state-enforced religion.

I shudder to think that one day, if most of the United States is of a different religion than it is today, that some pontificating schmuck tries to tell us all that the US is now a Buddhist/Hindu/Zoroastrian/Taoist/Muslim - pick one - nation and we should be run be its principles. Policy should not be derived from religion.

I guess the question begs itself - what is meant by "Christian nation"? Does it mean we're a theocracy - because clearly we're not.

Does it mean that we're a nation of primarily people who identify themselves as Christians? Because, clearly we are that.

Even in the "fall and decline of Christianity", as I hear it being called, 3 out of 4 Americans claim to be Christians.

Does it mean that we seek Christians as our political leaders, and expect them to govern with a sense of Christian morality? If you watch political ads and speeches, this is an easy question to answer. Politicians believe that's what we want, and often do anything to show that they're deeply faithful (how's that church hunt coming, Barry?).

So, we're clearly not a theocracy, but clearly a Christian nation.

A handful of Republicans run for office trying to chime in on Christian values and stressing their religion. Plenty, if not most, don't win. Not on a national scale, anyway.

Just because their morality and issues match up with "Christian" morality, it doesn't mean that Christians are the only ones who feel that way about an issue or that it's a "Christian" value opposed to an American value.
