Give illegal immigrant children a chance

"magine this: You're eight years old and your mother says you're moving. You go with her, of course (do you have any choice?) and, once you get to your new home, you settle into your eight-year-old's life of school, friends, sports and television.

But ten years later you come to understand the importance of the move: You are 18 years old, and you can't get a job. You can't go to college. You can't get a driver's license. Because the trip your mother had you take was across the border, into the U.S. illegally, and you find you're an undocumented alien.

What should the U.S. do with you? Should you be held accountable for your mother's actions?

The DREAM Act, recently reintroduced in the Senate, aims to address this heart-breaking issue by giving kids in this situation a path to citizenship. To qualify, a person must have entered the U.S. prior to the age of 16 (and be under 30), have been here for at least five years, and have a high school diploma or been accepted into college. Once they obtain their temporary status, which lasts up to six years, they must complete college, or two years of military service, to be eligible for permanent residence.

Sounds hard to oppose, right? Innocent bystanders, Americanized young, who will be asked to prove they are hard-working members of our society being given a chance to live productive lives . . . who can be against that?

Well, it turns out to my dismay, a lot of people can."

getting close.

but to be honest, laws should be followed and they should have been sent packing with that mother that obviously does not care about her childs future in the first place.

Agreed. And why should they get a college education, paid for, and folks like me have to pay out our azz to send our kids to college? I don't see it as their fault if they were brought here at a very young age, but their parents should be held accountable. Why should they get a free education?

Quote:
With increased graduation rates comes a positive fiscal impact for our economy. The average 30-year-old who has graduated from college will pay $5,300 more per year in taxes and cost $3,900 less in criminal justice and welfare payments, amounting to over $9,000 in positive fiscal impact per year.
And our taxes are paying for their education. Sorry, this is Why don't the taxpayers pay for my kids college?

Exactly

Imagine this: You're eight years old and your mother says that you can have a big house, pool in the backyard, great furniture. Then, you settle into your eight year old's life in that big nice house with your nice school, friends, sports, television, etc.

Then, come to find out, it wasn't really your mom's house, but someone else's altogether.

Should you be held accountable for your mother's actions? What should the homeowner do? Shouldn't you be allowed to live in someone else's house?

Sounds hard to oppose, right? Innocent bystanders, big-nice-houseized young, who will be asked to prove they are hard-working members of that neighborhood being given a chance to live productive lives . . . who can be against that?

Why do liberals act like it's so impossible to get US citizenship, when immigrants do it every day? Are they just stupid and don't realize there already is a "path to citizenship"?

I may consider it only if they had to pay for college themselves. I am already worried about how we are going to pay for our kids, 4 and 2, to go to college if our IRA & 401K stock trends continue. I think my head would explode if our taxes were paying for illegals to go to college.

I don't have a problem with illegal immigrant children getting permanent residency if they complete college or serve in the military. I don't have a problem with that at all... it's not their fault they were brought over here most of the time.

Now, paying for their college is when most American children can't afford to go to college and all the part time jobs they can get to help pay for college are taken.

What is it with politicians today? Giving free college education on taxpayer dollar to illegal immigrants and repeat juvenile law offenders? What's next?

I guess obeying the law and doing the right thing is a moral hazard now since our governments are handing the bill of irresponsible people over to responsible law-abiding citizens who are struggling.
