I am Catholic and IMO there is no contradiction. The CC does oppose the death penalty, but it is not an absolute. The Church does recognize that there are some situations in which the death penalty is necessary, "the Church has acknowledged as well founded the right and duty of legitimate public authority to punish malefactors by means of penalties commensurate with the gravity of the crime, not exluding, in cases of extreme gravity, the death penalty," CCC 2266.

Conversely, regarding abortion, the CCC says this, "Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception." CCC 2270.

As for Iraq, there is such a thing as a "just war". CCC 2309, there "are the traditional elements enumerated in what is called the "just war" doctrine.

The Holy Father and Pres. Bush may not have agreed on what is a "just war", but again, it is not absolute.

Hope this helps.

OK, so, is it fair to say that, in your view, O'Donnell is wrong and is misrepresenting the churches views?

Yes, and I think it is also fair to say O'Donnell is the hypocrite if he claims to be Catholic.

OK. Again, I only ask because he really jumped on Buchanan who was saying, basically, what you are saying; there is difference between abortion and the death penalty and there is a difference between war and abortion in the churches eyes.

Did [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_O%27Donnell]O'Donnell9/URL] claim to be Catholic? The statements as you present them suggests he's pulling this stuff out of a dirty brown place and presenting it as fact. He sounds like a gaggle of college sophomores debating at 1 AM in the dorm library.

Sounds like he's continuing with his usual all-thrust-no-vector debating style.

Equating the justifiable killing of a serial killer or rapist, a person who would murder a police officer, a person who is a danger to anyone in his area including guards at a prison, with the killing of an innocent fully formed perfect fetus in the 7th or 8th month is beyond reason.

There is no comparison. Anyone who tries to compare it is an idiot.

You can go into all of the intricacies and circumstances such as rape ,incest, being proven guilty and biased juries, but the basic statement is correct.

The two cannot be equated.
