Not just the number of cops, but the number of firefighters as well.

Our "free" "volunteer" firefighters get paid $3,000/year (plus retirement) based on the number of calls they respond to per year. A situation which may require 2-5 people could have 25 people on the list of those that "responded" (which could mean never even going to the scene). If we're going to pay for our volunteers to show up, they should be necessary and not just getting call numbers in.

I have noticed that when reading the local rag. Seven or eight engine companies respond to an automobile fire that takes a minute to extinguish. I always thought it was because the volunteers need to swap recipes for "Goulosh-to-feed-thirty" meals.
