Slap For 'porky Windbag' Rangel

Rep. Charles Rangel was given the "Mighty Windbag Award" yesterday by a taxpayer group for his effort to secure almost $50,000 to put a windmill on a Harlem building.

The embattled Rangel was singled out for the dubious honor while also winning his second "Oinker" award in two years for pigging out on what the group deemed pork-barrel waste.

Citizens Against Government Waste cited Rangel's $47,575 "earmark" to help create a wind-power project at the Harlem United Community AIDS Center on West 124th Street.


According the request letter that Harlem United sent to Rangel, the money will go to install New York's first room-mounted windmills to power a housing project for AIDS patients. The letter said that the windmills will save the organization 10 percent a year on electricity costs.



Rangel stood behind his earmark yesterday, saying he's happy to take credit for helping a worthy organization act in an environmentally responsible way.



"Harlem United is making an important contribution to the health of our community where asthma is rampant. Anyone who tries to make fun of that either doesn't understand or care about my community's needs," Rangel said.


Rangel is currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for failing to pay taxes on or to disclose income, occupying several rent-controlled New York apartments, and other lapses.


Last year, Rangel was awarded the "Narcissist Oinker Award" for his earmark providing almost $2 million to an uptown educational program called the Charles B. Rangel Center.

WTH is a room mounted windmill.

Does this mean that the only way the wind can get to the windmill is if it is blowing directly in through the window? Or do you stick it out the window when the wind is blowing?
I tried googling "room mounted windmill," but didnt get an answer.

Rangel then enlisted in the United States Army, and served from 1948 to 1952.[9] During the Korean War, he was a member of the all-black 503rd Field Artillery Battalion in the 2nd Infantry Division.[10] In late November 1950, this unit was caught up in heavy fighting in North Korea as part of the U.N. forces retreat from the Yalu River. In the Battle of Kunu-Ri, PFC Rangel was part of a vehicle column that was trapped and attacked by the Chinese Army.[10] In the subzero cold, Rangel was injured by shrapnel from a Chinese shell.[11] Some U.S. soldiers were being taken prisoner, but some looked to Rangel, who was only a private first class. Rangel with others, helped lead some 40 men from his unit, during three days of freezing weather, out of the Chinese encirclement; nearly half of the battalion was killed in the overall battle.[12] Rangel was awarded a Purple Heart for his wounds and the Bronze Star with Valor for his actions.[13] His unit was also awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. Unit Citations are given to the entire membership of the unit not just one person and are required to be worn by Soldiers that would subsequently serve in that unit. He also received three battle stars.[13] In 2000, Rangel reflected with CBS News that "Since Kunu Ri – and I mean it with all my heart, I have never, never had a bad day."[10]
