If the punishment for rape were lowered to a $25 fine - but you've never been raped - would you feel that this change would effect you in any way? Would you feel that it would demean your status in any way?

No, I'm not equating rape and homosexualiity in any way, shape, or form. My point is that diminishing the institution of marriage (by allowing the definition to change to same-gendered unions, incestuous unions, multiple partner unions, etc) would demean the very concept of marriage. I'm trying to give you some example that may help you see how law can effect meaning.

I'm still not understanding how you can compare ILLEGAL acts against NON-CONSENTING adults or minors to same-sex marriage (which is between two consenting adults).

And I'm not really worried about same-sex couples (who are in love) demeaning the concept of marriage when there are people getting drunk and married on a whim in vegas. There are plenty of hetero couples getting married for all the wrong reasons. I'm not worried about same-sex couples wanting to get married for the right reasons.

I'm not comparing those things (that was why I wrote i wasn't comparing those things). I'm comparing changing the law on what the definition of marriage is (which I feel demeans the overall benefit to society that marriage provides) to changing the law on the punishment for rape, which I feel would diminish women in general.

See, i feel changing the law to dilute the definition of marriage (which you implied could include allowing incestuous relationships and multiple partner relationships) would demean all marriages. that's what I was comparing.

you're comparing a specific hypothetical case of good same-gendered unions to a specific hypothetical case of bad marriage. I don't look at it so narrowly. I look at the overall statistics and compare the overall institutions.

Changing the punishment for rape (someting illegal) and changing the law to allow same-sex marriages is STILL not the same. How does changing the law to allow same-sex marriages affect you? You are married to a woman, right? How does Joe Schmoe marrying John Smith affect your marriage to your wife? It doesn't. Changing the punishment for rape affects something illegal, and rape could affect anyone. I'm pretty sure you'll never be forcibly married to a gay man.
