My source is the official white house site regarding the first ladies..First Ladies

It is more of a tradition than a statute, but if one thinks about it, could you imagine going to work as a first lady. You have to schleppe with the secret service each day, which is costly to tax payers and I suppose it could bring a conflict of interest depending on what employment she holds.

I was just curious, based on your phrasing and context. It brought to mind what might happen if Palin runs and wins the Presidency (or any woman who is the President). Would the First Dude work or what?

I imagine a First Dude would have to give up his employ also. But then again, given the unprecedented first, I imagine the first First Dude would have the honor of setting protocol where the role is concerned. I still can't see a spouse working, but then I understand Vice President Biden's wife continues to teach. Different rules of protocol? Who knows?

I wont argue one way or the other about why she is no longer a lawyer.

She has been mentioned as a distinguished lawyer.

Fact is she is not a lawyer she gave that up or it was taken away depending on your point of view, and she is not distinguished unless someone thinks you get distinguished by taking a $300,000 job in payment for your husband getting a grant for your employer.

A job that was so important that they decided not to replace her. And no she isnt irreplacable. Most anyone could do what she did , work 4 hours a day and go home.
