CAFE facts...

Today, OGM motors, Obama Government Motors release new fuel efficiency standards, up something like 30% from where they are now by 2014 or some such. edit; 2016

On the face of it, conservatives should support conservation and, all things being equal, a 35 mpg fleet average is better than 20.

All things are not equal.

So, you engineer types. There's only so much energy in a gallon of gas, so, it can only do so much work, in this case moving a vehicle at an acceptable speed with acceptable acceleration and performance.

What does a 35mpg fleet look like? Is my '07 Tacoma 6 cylinder with awfully good performance, yet only 17 mpg, a thing of the past?

My suspicion is that it is the FAULT of government that solid, decent 50mpg cars are not available BECAUSE of government yet now, as usual, government is running to the rescue.

Excess government is akin to a man putting his boot on your throat and then expecting you to be pleased with all the good he's done when he takes it off so you can breathe.

Next up, when Americans refuse to buy the mico cars, higher fuel taxes to "assist" them in seeing the light.

That's already in the cap and trade plan.

It's for your own good and Al Gore needs the money

You're kidding yourself if you don't think the Socialist party will bring you BOTH of those "gifts" eventually. Fuel efficient death-traps with the added bonus of high fuel taxes. Probably followed by "road-use" taxes and anything else they think of.

I hope those folks that are in the 95% of Americans that won't see a tax increase under Obama own a bicycle.

As it is now, only around 10-20% of the energy stored in gas is realized as productive work (e.g. moving the car, running AC, powering the radio). Most of the energy is lost by the engines - they are still fairly inefficient - only converting 20-40% of the stored energy to mechanical energy.

Of course, those things vary a great deal depending on the vehicle and the manner in which it is used. But, in theory, there is still a lot more energy in a gallon of gas that we can extract and used for productive purposes.
