New policy merges fuel efficiency, tailpipe limit

Relevant points quoted ...........

New policy merges fuel efficiency, tailpipe limits

Quote:
The new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard would require that automakers' fleets average 35.5 miles-per-gallon by 2016, four years earlier than Congress first mandated in 2007. By that date, the administration also will require tailpipe emissions to be reduced by 30 percent.

Quote:
The White House acknowledged that the new regulations would likely add about $600 to the cost of building each car, although the senior administration official said the gasoline savings would easily offset that.

But the playing field has changed dramatically recently, with Chrysler LLC in bankruptcy and both it and General Motors Corp. tapping federal money to keep afloat.
Quote:
"President Obama is putting the pedal to the floor when it comes to slashing our dependence on oil and confronting global warming," Sierra Club President Carl Pope said.

"Last month, the administration closed the books on the Bush era of climate denial once and for all by acknowledging the threat of global warming, and now today they are moving forward with a plan that will give new life to the American auto industry and ensure that the next generation of clean, efficient autos will be made right here in the USA," he said.

AMAZING.. the car companies have been against this for YEARS.. but now that TWO big car companies are being run by APPOINTED CEO's.. they are in support of it..

Having the GM CEO come on the news and tell us how much he supports it has no weight with me..

The CAFE law was passed by Congress, the new regulation by Presidential fiat.

Why are we paying Congress if Obama is making the laws? We dont need a House and Senate with the new Fuehrer. He takes over Auto companies, takes over banks, mortgage companies, health care, jumps tall buildings in a single bound.

Not bad for a poor bastard Kenyan boy raised by his Grandmother.

On Fox this morning, Carol Browner said that Americans want cars that get better mileage. I wonder how she knows this? Did she look at industry data?

If she was right, the Toyota Prius would be the top seller in the US. It isn't even in the top 10.

If it was all about value, as in price plus fuel economy, the Toyota Yaris would be their best seller. The Prius and the Yaris are beaten by the Camry, Corrola, Matrix, RAV4, and Tacoma.

The Focus would be the top selling Ford, instead of being beaten by the Fusion, Escape, and F-series.

The Caliber would be the best selling Dodge, instead of being beaten by the Ram Truck and Grand Caravan.

The Nissan Versa would be their best seller instead of the Altima.

Comrade Ahnold may fall for this, but I don't buy it. What a load of crap.

I think she is partially correct.
Americans would like high gas mileage, hell, who wouldnt like a car that runs for free?
but the reality is that Americans want space, they want the power to do what they need to do, and that is a conflict with the mileage.

Ive been driving my wifes jetta for over a week now because my truck is in the shop, I have over 300miles on the tank, and it just hit the 3/4 mark on the gas tank yesterday. I love that.
However, if I were loading up the family for a vacation, I certainly would not be thinking about putting 12000lbs of trailer on the back of that Jetta. For that I need to run the truck.

Now, with the price of trucks, I cant afford to own the truck and a small car for mileage, so Im stuck with driving the truck to work.

Put a truck out there that gets 30 or 40mpg, and give it the ability to tow heavy loads, and the room inside for comfort and Im all about that.

The day will come, but its not here yet, and forcing it to be here too soon is only going to cause problems down the road.

They say it will only increase the price of the car about $600 per. The car companies will jack the price about $6000 per car. Did the idiots ever think about what the oil companies will do when they lose the revenue from gasoline? Of course they will up the price to make up for it. No cost savings here.

Im sure that as soon as obama takes control of the oil companies he will impose a freeze on the profits that they can make.

No one else commenting on Obama making laws instead of Congress. I guess they like that.

New investment opportunity -

I'm securing a large climate controlled warehouse to store and preserve 2010 premium Pick-ups and SUV's for release into the market in 2016.

I'm expecting to be even farther ahead of the curve on this one than I am with firearms, ammunition, reloading components.

Currently taking investors.
