Apology Without Reparations Riles Some Lawmakers

Quote:
When the Senate voted earlier this month to formally apologize for slavery and racial segregation, it appeared to be consistent with other nonbinding, symbolic resolutions that lawmakers have passed before, apologizing for such things as the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.

But a disclaimer saying that nothing in the resolution supports or authorizes reparations by the United States is causing dissension among several members of the Congressional Black Caucus and may prevent the two chambers from uniting on the measure.

"I would not want to have any language in place that would deny anyone, any citizen, the right to address a grievance," said Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., head of the Caucus.

"I feel that some method other than just an apology should be made," said Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss. "People should be made whole."

Some folks just never give up.

I will be happy to make reparations for slavery. I will sign over my check from the Romans as soon as they send it to me. They owe me since they enslaved my ancestors throughout Europe! Another gimme free stuff approach by those unwilling to work, go to school or try to better themselves.

Which people would that be? Anyone that could remotely considered affected is at least two generations removed (and probably more like four generations). How is anyone alive today due anything?

Seriously, even if one could prove a connection to a slave, what is the calculation for getting money 150+ years later?

I say we give them the very same pay the slaves got X 150. Or a free boat ride back to whichever country they claim is "home." Maybe we should subtract the free transportation they got coming over here and any public assistance payments received by their families over the last 150 years. Let's see how much they owe back. The deficit might be gone.

My solution is very bit as feasible and ridiculous as the idea to pay any repartitions.
