U.S. Abortion Attitudes Closely Divided

U.S. Abortion Attitudes Closely DividedForty-seven percent of Americans identify as “pro-life,” 46% as “pro-choice”

Quote:
A mid-July USA Today/Gallup survey finds 47% of Americans calling themselves "pro-life" and 46% "pro-choice." This is less positive for the "pro-life" position than was true in a Gallup survey in May. However, both 2009 readings show more Americans labeling themselves "pro-life" than has been the case in recent years.

I'm always happy to see polls that show even slight movement towards slowing or ending infanticide.

When will the pollsters use the proper terminology? Pro-life and Pro-choice are on two different planes. Use For-abortion and Against-abortion sometime.

Part of the problem is that they break it into two catagories.
if you are agianst it, you are against it all the time.
if you are for it, you are for it all the time.

there are a good deal of people that would agree to abortion (very early term) in cases of rape, incest or real health threat to the mother. Yet, those same people would be against abortion simply for the reason of birth control after a careless night of bumping uglies in a drunken stupor.

Because I really don't know many people who are "for abortion" any more than they are "for executing criminals". What they state is that they aren't against anyone making that choice. I know that sounds like hair-splitting, but it's not as though they are for ending every pregnancy, or have actually had an abortion. Most pro-choicers I know haven't.

Most people I know who are pro-choice are, at some level, agreed that it's not the preferred means of birth control. They'd rather people use better means of contraception.

Admittedly, most people I know who are 'against abortion' are against its use all the time, but they're all over the page regarding contraception.

And what you describe is the other plane I mentioned. pro-choice people want a woman to have a choice to do whatever she wants. That is a benign and permissive position to take.

Problem is, the pro-life people are arguing against only one of the 'whatever' options are are painted as malignant and restrictive.

Pro life and pro death.

Abortion is the most barbaric, ghoulish thing we, people, do. It is nothing short of murder of the most innocent and most helpless we have.

However, in a free land, you can not make someone want or care for their child. It is up to them. Wanna get rid of it, best to get on with it. It ain't gonna get any easier or less ugly.

That just needed to be reposted. Anyone in doubt can see just how savage it is by searching for abortion photos on the web. If you've never seen the pictures before, prepare to be apalled.

Right. However, in a free society, you can NOT make a woman want or care for her baby. You can promote it. It can be argued for. But, it should not, in my view, be a matter of law. It HAS to be up to her.
