Town Hall Screamers Don’t Care About Policy

"As the debate over health care reform continues its heated march through August, conservatives are defending the increasingly common lawmaker-directed town hall tirades as simple expressions of concern from constituents worried about the Democrats’ plans to overhaul the system.

But if Rep. Brad Miller’s (D-N.C.) experience is any indication, the Democrats’ suspicions that the town hall ranters are motivated by politics and not policy appear apt. From Miller’s interview with CNN this morning:

Most people want to have access to members of Congress to talk about a specific issue and they really think a one-on-one meeting is more access than a town hall meeting, and that’s what I’ve done.

So we were puzzled when we got, when we started getting calls in the last two weeks demanding a town hall meeting. And my staff would say, “Wouldn’t you just like to sit and have a private conversation with the congressman, and explain your position and ask him about his?”

They didn’t want that. They wanted a town hall meeting and I think we’ve seen why.

Right. Why have a civil conversation with your congressman when you’d risk missing your YouTube moment?

The left bytching about the right organizing protests is like GM complaining about government spending.

Nice link, but the hater mongers can't read anyways. Their too busy loading their guns, foaming at the mouth, getting red in the face, smoking a pack a cigarettees, and trying to figure out "why am I going to a town hall meeting".

I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration.

I'm sick and tired too

However, absolutely nothing is accomplished when one side is yelling and doesn't use facts. It's not about disagreement---it's about the yelling and not listening. I would prefer a one-on-one with a decision maker. Less theater but certainly effective.

What do we have to back up this assertion of his staff having asked that question?

Oh I'm sorry. I forgot the full attribution.....

Hillary Clinton, March 2003

I remember her saying that. I could probably find a sound clip.

The reason people are yelling is because the congressman are not listening at all. They're making sales pitches. They aren't fielding questions, and they clearly show disdain for dissent with their snide putdowns.

Stenn y was being intervied on 98.3 and he said he didn't care about what his constituants want, he'll vote for what he wants.
Yelling at a represenative that doesn't represent you seems somewhat mild.

Hmmm, "somewhat mild"? So what are you suggesting that people do instead of yelling???

Perhaps Pelosi and Reid should go back and start over and this time include the GOP instead of shutting them out and eliminating their rights to debate.

I mean if they are seriously interested in a bipartisan solution to a national problem they souldn't be afraid of duly elected representatives of half the country right?
