An open letter to Mr. Obama's mother, circa 1966

Dear Ms. Dunham

I am usually loathe to give others advice on being a parent, and I apologize in advance for presuming to do so in this case, but I feel I must. I hope this letter will be received without offense, as it is written without the intention of giving any.

Here is my advice. When your son does not get his way, and then proceeds to cry about it, please do not give in to him. When he tries to use your maternal empathy against you, as young children are naturally inclined to do, do not indulge his emotional manipulation. It is especially important at those times, more so than at others, that you stand your ground and don't give him what he wants. When he pitches a temper tantrum in public, because he can't have the giant rainbow lollipop in the store window, please don't reverse course and buy it for him. I know it is hard for a mother to hear her precious child cry, but you must have the strength to endure it. It is the loving thing to do, and it is what is best for your child in the long run. It is your job, as a parent, to force him to confront the reality, sooner rather than later, that he cannot cry his way to whatever he wants in this world - that he might have to accept that he won't always get exactly what he wants, when he wants it. Ms. Dunham, your son is in his formative years right now, and nothing will ever be able to erase mistakes, if you make them, in this regard.

Now, I know what you are probably thinking. I could be giving this same advice to any parent. Why am I singling you out? Why not an open letter to all mothers? Well, you see Ms. Dunham, someday your son will be the President of the United States. And, as President, from time to time, he won't get what he wants. He won't always get his way. When he doesn't, it will be best for everyone involved if he doesn't believe that he can cry his way to whatever he wants. It will be best if he doesn't think that a temper tantrum, or 8, will convince people to give it to him. It will be best, if he has already learned that no sometimes actually does mean no, and that he just has to deal with the finality of that reality - and not by crying louder and louder until that no magically becomes a yes.

You see, Ms. Dunham, your proper parentage at this period in time is very important. Without it, this nation might someday have to face the embarrassing spectacle of having its President, the most powerful man in the world, running around from the floor of the House of Representatives, to every television studio he can find, and to every other place with a microphone or video camera, crying louder and louder and threatening to hold his breath until he turns blue, all because no one will give him that giant multicolored lollipop in the store window. Wouldn't this nation, and your son, be much better off if we never had to confront such an undignified display of leadership? Furthermore, and more importantly, shouldn't this nation's public policy be determined by prudence, and not the Chief Executive's ability to finally wear down the collective will of the populace with his incessant, tireless, inescapable whining?

Thank you for your time, and congratulations, by the way, on raising a future President of the United States. Not many people have done that.

With all the respect due the mother of a future President

great thoughts however., in all fairness I would suggest leaving his mother out of this, even if she is dead.

I think he was around ten by that time, and likely would have already learned that he could get his way by crying long and loud enough, or learned that he couldn't.

Yeah, that's why I made sure to be as respectful as I could. It isn't about his mother, but that context was necessary to effectively make the point - that President Obama is coming off like the spoiled 5 year old who believes he can get his way by crying loud enough. The longer he goes without getting his way, the louder he cries. And, I fear that what is going to happen is that we are going to get tired of his crying - get worn down by it - and give him what he wants, just so we don't have to deal with it anymore. That will be a terrible mistake. The point is that we, in effect, are going to be the indulgent parent who isn't strong enough to endure, or squash, the temper tantrum.

I understand now.

but, I dont think that the public is going to break down for him, every time he opens his oversized lips, he get more people against him.

Congress is really going to have to consider if the health care is worth their not continuing in their job.

its going to be interesting.

plus, lets say congress passes it now, but its not supposed to take effect for four years, that gives us time to vote for some Americans for congress that can go in and reverse what was done, or at least re-write it to take the teeth out of it.

This post does get you thinking about his childhood. How did he get the connections and meet the people that he did when he got older. Were they friends/associates of his parents? I really don't think white granny had the type of connections that allowed Obama to move up so quickly, makes you wonder doesn't it?

This describes the entire Liberal/Progressive party.

There you go.

That's the secret of Obama's magical missing years. What did he do in college, how did he travel in Pakistan and who paid for his education?
