I think more parents should be stepped in on. Christ, look at the state of the world we're living in. There's no personal responsibility, a sense of entitlement, and a gross unconcern for other people. That being said, I think it needs to happen as a whole; the playing field should be leveled and money or social class shouldn't help nor hinder. You're a crackhead and spend your food stamps on steak for your pimp while your kids starve, you lose your kids; you're wealthy and feed your kids cookies and ice cream while they play Nintendo because you don't want to be bothered with them, you lose your kids. Maybe losing one's kids is a little extreme but mandatory parenting classes and nutritional counseling or something. You still don't want to think about your kids, you lose them.

And these legions of kids would be taken care of how? Some huge government care facility that would be the equivalent of orphanages in the past? Government boarding schools? Farm them out to foster homes of which there are not enough already?

Well since its never going to happen I'm pretty much just speaking out of my ass and giving an opinion. But quite frankly ANY of your aforementioned would be better than what a lot of kids really do live in.

interestingly I just caught where it said that the family originally called social services (or whatever the equiv is) because they needed help controlling their children...and the caseworker type person said the weight is not the only issue. I'm inclined to believe that.
