Global Warming and Lake Nyos

read about this in Uncle John's bathroom reader ....

Quote:
Lake Nyos

Lake Nyos is a crater lake in the Northwest Province of Cameroon, located about 200 miles (322 km) northwest of Yaoundé.[1] Nyos is a deep lake high on the flank of an inactive volcano in the Oku volcanic plain along the Cameroon line of volcanic activity. A natural dam of volcanic rock hems in the lake waters.

A pocket of magma lies beneath the lake and leaks carbon dioxide (CO2) into the water, changing it into carbonic acid. Nyos is one of only three known lakes to be saturated with carbon dioxide in this way, the others being Lake Monoun, at a distance of 100 km (62 mi) SSE, and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. On August 21, 1986, possibly triggered by a landslide, the lake suddenly emitted a large cloud of CO2, which suffocated 1,700 people and 3,500 livestock in nearby villages.[2] Though not completely unprecedented, it was the first known large-scale asphyxiation caused by a natural event. To prevent a repetition, a degassing tube that syphons water from the bottom layers of water to the top allowing the carbon dioxide to leak in safe quantities was installed in 2001, though additional tubes are needed to make the lake safe.[3]

Today, the lake also poses a threat due to its weakening natural wall. A geological tremor could cause this dike to give way, allowing water to rush into downstream villages all the way into Nigeria.

what the Wiki article does not mention, and was in the book is, the fix to prevent the disaster releases an estimate 700 Million cubic feet of CO2 every yar .....

Lake Nyos: plan for degassing lakes Nyos and Monoun, Cameroon. Gas disaster at Nyos: mitigation of a natural hazard at Nyos.

I have a better idea: instead of wasting all that money (how much is coming from the UN and the United States?), how about not letting anyone live or build withing 20 miles of the place?

Or is that too simple?

I first heard about this in an explanation of the plagues of Egypt, to explain how the firstborn could have been killed. I have since read there's really no serious proof of it, but the conjecture goes that the firstborn of every family would lie in a bed on the bottom floor, while all the older siblings would sleep on the roof - leaving the firstborn most vulnerable to a spread of asphyxiating gas that is heavier than air.

Basically - yep.

They had an explanation for each of the plagues, occuring in order.

Wiki has a fairly extensive rebuttal of Exodus Decoded, which is the special I saw. Still, it was interesting.

I know this is off topic but, these explanations are typically used to disprove that it was the hand of God that did these things. It's my thought that: why wouldn't God use the very nature He created to carry out His purpose?

Just my thought about that.

I'm pretty sure this one was NOT intending that, but the author, while creative and interesting about some of his conclusions is way off chronologically and archaeologically with some of them.

Frankly, one of my biggest beefs with the Exodus is the lack of archaeological evidence that a million people invaded Palestine, or that they spent forty years in the Sinai peninsula. Such an event would stick out, both historically and physically, but it's just not there. The only thing that makes sense is that the numbers were MUCH MUCH smaller.

Were you expecting maybe a trail of empty Pringles cans in the desert to prove the 40 years of wandering really occurred?
