Steele: There Were Calls For My Resignation

Steele: 'From The Very Beginning' There Were Calls For My Resignation (VIDEO)

"Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele appeared last night on the Rachel Maddow show, offered a vociferous defense of his performance as chairman -- and said how some people had opposed his style of managing the party from the very beginning.

In her introduction, Maddow discussed the immediate scheming that occurred against Steele, and how right-wing media outlets such as the Washington Times quickly began agitating for his ouster.

"I think you nailed it pretty well," Steele said, "that, you know, from the very beginning, literally within the first 30 days of my being on the job, there were calls for my resignation. Now, I don't know how one does -- how you screw up so badly in 30 days on a job that they want to get rid of you when you don't even know where the washrooms are."

Okay, that's annoying. Steele couldn't do the job and wasn't particularly true to the GOP he supposedly led, and now he wants to cry - to Rachel Maddow, of all people - because he got the boot.

And I used to be a big fan of his. Almost had a mental breakdown when that damn Ben Cardin beat him out for the Senate. But he wasn't much of a go-getter as RNC chairman and took the party message all over the place.

ATTENTION MIKE STEELE:

You're not supposed to be bi-partisan when you head up one of the parties. Duh.

If you wanna know what a national chairman is supposed to do, see Howard Dean from his famous scream to taking over as DNC chair to the election of 2008.

He had a 50 state strategy that many of the old DNC hands thought was a lot of wasted time and money. Didn't matter. He had his vision, his way of doing things and he TOOK the reins and did the damn job, like him or not. People knew where he stood, his view on the issues and, most importantly, they knew where his party stood. He did the ground work and the TV and interview work.

Steele spent some of his time doing those things. However, he was also known for tiffing with the right and not really having a solid, consistent message and plan. He certainly never coalesced with the TEA party. His disagreements with the left were strained and unconvincing.

Any objective measure of his time as chair, and I was all for him getting the chance, doesn't much shine on him. Maybe he deserves more credit at the state level? I don't know. I do know pretty much anyone could have 'lead' the charge in 2010 and done as well.

Now, all that said, for sure, it is tough being RNC chair because, at core, the GOP does not like the right any more than they have to put up with them o win so, it's a tough sled anyway. We are a center driven party unlike the Dems who are very much driven from the left.

So, tough job that he did not excel at and showing up on Maddow basically says "Hey out there, I'm looking for work! I'll do anything. What do you want me to be today?"
