| Why Obama has to get Egypt right Why Obama has to get Egypt right "Revolutions usually start with enthusiasm and end in tears. In the case of the Middle East, the tears could be avoided if President Obama stands firmly by the values that got him elected. Although American power and influence in the world have declined, our allies and their armies look to us for direction. These armies are strong enough to maintain law and order as long as they stay out of politics; thus the revolutions can remain peaceful. That is what the United States should insist on while encouraging corrupt and repressive rulers who are no longer tolerated by their people to step aside and allow new leaders to be elected in free and fair elections. That is the course that the revolution in Tunisia is taking. Tunisia has a relatively well-developed middle class, women there enjoy greater rights and opportunities than in most Muslim countries, and the failed regime was secular in character. The prospects for democratic change are favorable. Egypt is more complex and, ultimately, more influential, which is why it is so important to get it right. The protesters are very diverse, including highly educated and common people, young and old, well-to-do and desperately poor." |

| Why would anyone think Obama, or the Republicans, are going to, or have to, get anything 'right'? Obama has failed on his stimulus, is on the verge of failing on health and, even if his 'fix' stays, costs will, by design, only continue to soar, increasing the stunning profits of his friends in the health care/industrial complex. He has divided the nation further. His war in A'stan is a quagmire. Iraq doesn't look good. Energy costs are choking average Americans and he's done nothing as housing gets worse and worse. Illegal immigration? Hasn't lifted a finger. All he's done is make Wall Street happy, make GM a government entity and made pals with John Baynor. Why is there any expectation he'll do something right on Egypt?

| Interestingly, under Bush the world was a pretty stable place. There were issues in some places, but mostly old Soviet Bloc Countries, but countries of our allies were pretty stable. Now that Obama is in charge it seems everyone in the world sees it as their chance to overthrow their government/leadership without fear of support or retaliation from the US.. As if they KNOW we aren't going to stand by/ support nor defend ANY of our allies. Even ones we've had, and nurtured for decades. Someone mentioned earlier.. Egypt falls, new leadership comes in, and they invade Israel with the best weapon systems the US has sold to them... and we won't come to the aid of Israel either is my guess. It's possible to see M1 against M1 tank battles in the future.. or F16 v F16 dogfights..

| I had an interesting conversation with an older, classically liberal friend. She was of a mind that Obama was embarrassed by the first one as he was in the middle of war escalation as he received it, her suggesting he did not know he was going to be getting it. I told her there was no way in the world he did not know, that he did want it, that he did not care, at all about, the absurdity of a war monger, in action, getting a peace prize and he could have quietly let it be known to not nominate him had he a shred of concern for that. To her credit, she accepted that he had to know and that escalating war was not an act of peace. She saw the base, ruthless Obama, if only for a moment.
