ORANGE, Mass. (WWLP) - A civil rights controversy is brewing at an elementary school in the Town of Orange, and it all surrounds an11 year-old's drawing of the American Flag.

The family of Frankie Girard is claiming that their son's civil rights were violated after a teacher allegedly told him that hanging his picture of the American flag would offend another student.

The Butterfield Elementary School is at the center of controversy for the incident on Monday. According to Frankie Girard’s father, John, the boy was in art class drawing a picture.

"He was denied hanging the flag up. And, he asked if he could just even hang it on his desk, and he was told no. He could take the picture that he drew and take it home and be proud of it there,” Girard said.

Frankie's father told 22News that he is so outraged that he placed a call to the American Civil Liberties Union.
Uh huh. Once again, I have to throw the flag (ha)

I hate these stories that don't give you any real information. As it stands, sounds like the Dad is just looking for a conflict.

If you watch the video it says the kid was supposed to be working on another project and not drawing at the time, and that was the reason he wasn't allowed to hang his picture.

I work with 11 year olds. Some of them are not very good at communicating all of the facts to parents. In other words, they do not always tell the entire story truthfully about what happens at school. Sometimes they leave out things or even embellish the events to put themselves in a better position* (ie Dad not being mad because the kid got in trouble for not doing his work).

I agree with Vrai in calling

(*there IS an age requirement for working in the White House, right? -- just a thought)

And to me it was clear. When something happens at your kid's school, you take it up directly with the teacher and/or the principal. You don't alert the press, then start haranguing the ACLU. This is very similar to that whack job who thought his daughter's rights were being violated because she had to hear the Pledge of Allegiance being said at school.
