Why Did Security Escort a Woman in a Burka Out of an Obama Campaign Event?


If you asked about the short list of people who might get escorted out of a Barack Obama campaign event, you’d probably expect it to include conservative bloggers, Christian activists, gun rights activists or anyone else the administration has defined as a far right extremist over the past four years. What you might not expect is that a woman wearing both a black burka and pins representing United States Military insignia would get escorted out after reportedly yelling something at the President.

The bizarre incident was first noticed when Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) journalism instructor Vivian Medina-Messner posted a video showing the incident after President Obama spoke at VCU today.

The Daily Mail has since gotten snapshots of the event, though they’re no further toward understanding what exactly happened than anyone else. From their report:

The Secret Service is investigating after a woman wearing a black burqa was removed from President Obama’s inaugural re-election campaign rally at Virginia Commonwealth University on Saturday.

According to a White House pool report, photographers observed the woman being escorted out of the school’s Siegel Center gymnasium by Richmond police and other security officials during a packed-house rally of 8,000 people.

VCU police reported that the woman was heckling from the audience and was taken outside and released. A police dispatcher did not know what the woman had yelled.[...]

The woman, who has not been named, appeared to be wearing U.S. military pins and was carrying book. She cooperated with police, according to the report.
