| Yikes: Miss Ohio Cites Prostitute in ‘Pretty Woman’ as ‘Positive and Accurate’ Depiction of Women During Miss USA Pageant |
Beauty contestants aren’t necessarily known for their intellectual prowess, but Miss Ohio’s response Sunday to the question, “Do you think women are depicted in movies and on television in an accurate and positive way?” was so absurd that it’s making national news.
Miss Ohio Audrey Bolte Answers Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman is Accurate Portrayal of Women in Film | Miss USAQuite unexpectedly, Miss Ohio Audrey Bolte chose “Pretty Woman,” of all films, as her example of an “accurate and positive” depiction of women.
For those who are unfamiliar, “Pretty Woman” is a romantic comedy from the 1990′s where Julia Roberts plays a glamorous prostitute.
“I think it depends on the movie,” she explained. “I think there are some movies that depict women in a very positive role, and then some movies that put them in a little bit more of negative role. But by the end of the movie they show that ‘woman power’ that I know we all have. Such as movie Pretty Woman. We had a wonderful, beautiful woman, Julia Roberts, and she was having a rough time. But, you know what, she came out on top, and she didn’t let anybody stay in her path.” [Sic]
As the crowd paused, presumably somewhat confused, the contestant said “thank you,” and beamed.
