$6,800 Designer Jacket for Our Queen!

Political commentators have expressed their fury over the fact that Michelle Obama wore a jacket worth $6,800 to the pre-Olympics Opening Ceremony reception at Buckingham Palace on Friday.
Though the dazzling J Mendel jacket and skirt won critical acclaim from the style set, some pundits are furious that she elected to spend so much money on a garment while so many in the U.S. are suffering financially.
A post on the Gateway Pundit blog read that the design 'cost more than the average American family makes in a month ($4,284)'.

Maybe Michelle should change her name to Marie Antoinette Obama. I bet cake was served at the reception. And, the outfit is ugly. Who are the members of the "style set"? They need glasses! But, I am sure people will say that it is her money to spend as she pleases. I wonder if she asked Barack if the jacket made her backside look big? I wonder what he would have said; because it did.

I am, also, thinking that she is more proud of her outfit than she is of her country.

She's our first lady. I have no problem with her using her money to purchase something to make herself look and feel nice.

We all do that sometime in our life to the limits of what we can afford.

I am glad she represented the U.S. so nicely.

Now wait a minute... When they are trying to tell us we have to pay our fair share, spread the wealth around, and she pumps $6800 into a single piece of thread? Do you know what this could have done for about a dozen poor people? She could have paid some of the deficit down with this money. If they're asking us to sacrifice while they run around flaunting their wealth in our faces... ?

This is nothing more than shameless hypocrisy.

EDIT: And another thing... there is no stinking jacket worth $6800. Just plain out of touch with the people.

I think it's a stunning jacket. Abso-freaking-lutely beautiful and I do like the way she's styled it with the white skirt, but I don't think it does any favors for her figure. I think she has a great body but the jacket is very structured and is really made for someone with a willowy figure. It looks amazing and super stylish on the model but Michelle's curves make it look almost frumpy. I don't think she looks bad, but I do think that if you're going to spend that much on clothing that you should look out of this world amazing. She manages to make the jacket look a little boring. It would've looked amazing on Kate Middleton, though.

Also, it's customary for designers to lend (or gift) clothing to celebrities because it's great advertising. I'm not sure if the First Lady is allowed to receive clothing gratis but it's something to consider. Even if she doesn't get it for free I wouldn't be surprised if it's heavily discounted. I wouldn't think that it's borrowed because it isn't a sample size or even close.
