You are not paying attention, at all.

The system is WHY it costs so much. It is not abuse here and there, it is THE system. College does not cost so much because it is worth it. It costs so much because it is far, far too easy to get money for and the value to an 18 year old whose main goal is to go party for 4 years and maybe walk out with a psych degree explodes the cost in general for serious studies for serious students who have serious goals. College has become an extension of high school and the vast majority of kids are not there for serious purposes. They are there because it is expected and it's what everyone does. It is fashionable, socially and politically.

If we treated ANY product the same way, floods of easy money, consumers lose perspective of value and the market becomes distorted. Look at this in SIMPLE economic terms; if you are a business, a school, and the supply of customers is limitless, what will that do to the price?

It goes up.

It is one thing to suggest and promote kids going to college. It is quite another to throw mountains of money at it and expect good value for that.

My step-daughter realized high school and college were a joke. But in the finance field those pieces of paper are a necessity. So she blazed through both. She'll graduate this May at the age of 20. She already has a job lined up when she graduates.

On a side note, she's really pissed that Maryland now allows illegals to get in- state tuition rates.

Helping low-income students go to college is an investment that pays off in the long run, and even fiscal conservatives can see that.

Granted, there are far too many people who use Financial Aid and expect more so they can go to St. Mary's College (I've argued with MANY of these kids before). But, and I hate to use this term, "giving" a low-income student enough money in grants to attend community college (a lot of community colleges are offering four year degrees now because of the demand) is not a bad thing.

In the long run, it very well could be the difference between a kid working at Walmart for the rest of his life for $10/hour, paying no taxes, or that kid getting a degree and making $80,000/year and paying taxes back in to the system. I think the statistics are that like 60% of Americans who are born in to poverty spend their whole lives in poverty. It could be a little lower or a little higher, but I'm pretty sure it's close to that. If we, as a whole, can bring that number down even a little bit, it creates a better society for everybody.

Unfortunately, we, as a society, are greedy and selfish and don't want to pay taxes ourselves (while whining about those who can't pay taxes because of their income) just like we don't want to pay 50 cents extra for a $10 meal.
Been paying taxes a long time and to put into a system for a POS like in this video really bothers me especially when I had to scrape for the money to send my daughter to college. And she worked during that time. So to see this entitlement piece of crap throw my tax dollars away is disturbing and he is more than a minority. There are too many like this guy out there collecting a free education and sucking up on the system for their lives. This kid and others like him are just lazy, too lazy to work for a living. They will suck off the government for as long as we let them.
