| Giffords shuts them up at Hearing Breaking from Newsmax.com Emotion Rules at Senate Gun-Control Hearing In a dramatic appeal, wounded former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords urged Congress on Wednesday to enact tougher curbs on guns, saying, "too many children are dying" without them. "The time is now. You must act. Be bold, be courageous, Americans are counting on you," she told the Senate Judiciary Committee at Congress' first gun control hearing since 20 elementary school children were shot to death in Newtown, Conn., late last year. She spoke haltingly, a result of the wounds suffered when she was shot in the head in an attempted assassination two years ago that left six others dead. But in conflicting testimony a little more than an hour later, a top official of the National Rifle Association rejected bans on certain assault weapons and high-capacity magazines advocated by President Barack Obama and gun control advocates in Congress. Under persistent questioning from Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the panel's chairman, the NRA's Wayne LaPierre also conceded that in a reversal, his organization no longer supports universal background checks for gun owners. He said the current system is a failure because the administration doesn't prosecute potential violators aggressively. Again or should I say like always the NRA made them selves and their followers look like the ass's they are. |

| I'll be glad when congress can't pass anything and this all goes away, along with the brain-addled people who are so in favor of passing laws that cannot accomplish anything.

| This may sound mean but I think toting her up there for the democratic agenda was intentional (sympathy) and in my opinion, ridiculous. They really need to stop with all this yap yap crap and get back to working on a budget. We can make laws all day long but crazy people and criminals will find a way to arm themselves. Plus, with all this non-sense about background checks for purchasing a weapon is a mute point when mental heath information is covered under HIPAA.

| Gabrielle Giffords has turned herself into a human shield for the Leftist gun grabbers, evaporating any sympathy I ever had for her. |

It is amazing how you all cling to such ridiculous arguments and ignore common sense. Must one disconnect their brains to fit your mold of a "conservative"? No sane, rational person will ever tell you that background checks or assualt weapons bans will put an immediate and permanent halt to criminals obtaining weapons or mass shootings. In other words, nothing will ever eliminae the possibility. The goal, for all you who can't understand such basic principles, is to reduce the probability. Are you all really that dimwitted not to understand that increased background checks (that screen for mental illness and criminal behavior) will reduce the probability of guns getting into the wrong hands? Or are you so ideologically blinded that you can't see the causation? Antilock brakes don't prevent accidents...all the new sensors and cameras on cars won't prevent accidents...they reduce the probability and severity. Same goes for the capacity limits...reducing probabilities...reducing severity of incidents. To follow the line of logic from the gun lobby (which by the way doesn't give a damn about your 2nd amendment rights...they only care about protecting the gun manufacturers and sellers ability to profit from your paranoia), there is not a single thing that can be done about gun violence...and even if there were anything that could be done, nothing should be done because of the most narrow minded interpretation of the 2nd amendment. That's a helluva a way to think and run a country...defeatist at its core... | |
