It's okay, what's one meal...

Unbelievable. Things like this make my blood boil. I can't believe they can give themselves a raise, but
can't feed our soldiers breakfast? What is wrong with this picture?

Okay. Initial reseach has turned up these two websites. Military folk (current) will probably be more familiar with terms used on the first site than I was.

Looks like the original letter clipping is a mixture of truth (see Snopes)

Dwindling budget forces changes to mess halls - Army News | News from Afghanistan & Iraq - Army Times

snopes.com: Soldiers Going Hungry

Personally, I'm not happy with our folks in Afghanistan getting MRE's instead of a hot breakfast if they're stationary and not on the move. Then again, I don't make those kinds of decisions. I can only communicate my views to those who do.

Army: Hot breakfasts in Afghanistan cut due to logistics, not budget – Eatocracy - CNN.com Blogs

Got it. total search time >15 seconds.

Cliff notes, there is breakfast, just not a hot breakfast. And it has nothing to do with budget cuts, it's logistics. These bases are shifting over the natives.

Quote:
Colonel Joseph Wawro, the commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, said breakfast and the midnight meal are now MREs (Meal, Ready-to-Eat) at the affected bases, while lunch and dinner are still served hot. He also noted most dining facilities have take-away items like cereal, granola, energy bars, milk, juice, fruit, etc. for supplemental snacking.

"This has absolutely nothing to do with the national budget and everything to do with our responsible reduction of forces," Wawro said.

Wawro said the initial complaint may have been raised by a recently arrived unit that was unaware of the recent meal changes.

Giertz, however, noted that Braley wrote the letter out of concern for the troops’ morale.

"The least we can offer is to get them a good meal," Giertz said.

Registered dietitian and Captain Christina Deehl said while MREs are not very popular among the troops, they do yield all the nutrients a soldier needs to meet one-third of his or her Military Recommended Daily Allowance (MRDA).

"When we initially entered Iraq and Afghanistan, soldiers were eating MREs every day until we were logistically established. Once again when we draw down and pull out, we will see a similar trend," Deehl said.

Friend of mine posted this on FB a couple weeks ago and I called then. As effed up as our govt. is, they won't let our soldiers go hungry.

Snopes.com (ever the progressive cheerleader) has obviously never eaten an MRE.

One would certainly hope not but then again, these days....it wouldn't surprise me at all. Not one single bit!

I haven't either but I've heard that they are pretty obnoxious.

I ate one once, just out of curiosity (hubby had some here). They are good in a pinch, but definitely not something someone would want to eat every day.
