AP/Yahoo News - Fact Check: Overreaching in State of Union Speech

President Barack Obama did some cherry-picking Tuesday night in defense of his record on jobs and laid out a conditional path to citizenship for illegal immigrants that may be less onerous than he made it sound.

A look at some of the claims in his State of the Union speech, a glance at the Republican counterargument and how they fit with the facts:

OBAMA: "After years of grueling recession, our businesses have created over 6 million new jobs."

THE FACTS: That's in the ballpark, as far as it goes. But Obama starts his count not when he took office, but from the point in his first term when job losses were the highest. In doing so, he ignores the 5 million or so jobs that were lost on his watch, up to that point.

Private sector jobs have grown by 6.1 million since February 2010. But since he became president, the gain is a more modest 1.9 million.

And when losses in public sector employment are added to the mix, his overall jobs record is a gain of 1.2 million.

---------------------------------------------

That's just the first one. And this is coming from the AP of all places. Shocker. Course they threw in one from the Republican response, but SIX from Obama's speech.
Comments section as always is worth reading.

As AP stated, the President was correct in his numbers.

The silly portion of the AP fact checking is that economic cycles are not determined by the beginning and end of a Presidential term. Economic cycles are judged from peak to trough and trough to peak.

Where the policiticians and the Fed should be judged economically is by the length of expansions (trough to peak), the diffusion of those expansions (do they "lift all boats" or just a few?) and how short and shallow the contractions (peak to trough) are.

The silliness your argument is trying to make is that the economy should turn around from good to bad or bad to good on the Inauguration Day. Now, really, does that make any sense to you at all?

Say...speaking of silly things..have you noticed that this recessionary cycle, and particularly the recovery or lack thereof, is on track to break all records for its duration?

That's a good thing. Right? No?

From the list of invited guests at the SOTUA last night, from MSNBC:

"Alan Aleman of Las Vegas, an undocumented resident from Mexico and activist for the DREAM Act"

So the POTUS invites an illegal alien to the SOTUA, or am I mis reading the "undocumented resident" part?

Okay... so I decided to watch the burning cabin insted of the crash and burn state of our union last night... from the best I can put together this morning his proposed fixes are: 1) Let's spend billions more 2)Let's dictate more regulation 3)Let's start up some new federal agencies to oversee this new stuff and 4)Let's increase the minimum wage putting even more of an economic hurt on small businesses.

Did I get it straight?
