Arrow Public sides with Obama on minimum wage

Link to original article.

"In its new national poll, the Pew Research Center asked about President Obama's proposal to raise the minimum wage to $9 per hour. The results weren't close.

I put together this chart showing the public breakdown, and the fact that Americans, by a nearly three-to-one margin, endorse the White House's proposal.

Not surprisingly, there are significant partisan differences, but a minimum-wage increase enjoys majority support regardless of party -- 87% of Democrats, 68% of independents, and even 50% of Republicans.

In Congress, GOP leaders have already rejected Obama's proposal out of hand. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) condemned the idea within 10 hours of the president's State of the Union address, and a day later, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said the minimum wage shouldn't exist at all.

I should also note that there are alternatives to a minimum-wage increase, and some are quite credible.

Democrats support a new $9 wage as a way of improving the economic fortunes of struggling workers, which Dems hope will also have a broader economic benefit -- once these workers have more money in their pockets, they'll be more likely to spend it, pumping additional capital into the economy and generating more demand.

But as Matt Yglesias recently explained, economists have suggested related policies that strive for the same effect: expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit, embracing a Guaranteed Basic Income, increasing the refundable child tax credit, or even just an expansionary monetary policy.

For the record, Republican policymakers not only oppose the very popular idea of raising the minimum wage, they oppose each of the alternative policies, too. As Matt concluded, "They're just going to offer nothing." "

Raising the minimum wage is nothing more than a tax hike.

I would go a bit farther
I say make minimum wage a million a year, that way we are all rich, and the government gets a higher percentage from us in tax.

I solved everything. The budget is balanced and everyone can afford to live like a king.

Do the math...

Question for you boy (I know you wont answer): Say Obama gets his way and hikes the MW to $9. Considering the poor condition of our economy, then what?

Say you run a small business of 20 people. They work an average of 30 hours per week. You now have to pay each $1.75 more per hour. That’s $1050 per week more, $4200 per month, above what you’re already paying them. So, now you have to decide – do I take a hit to profits of $4200 and sell my house, or do I lay off 4 people to maintain my profits, stay in my own home and still be able to feed my kids?

That’s a tough choice.

You libs really care about those little people and small business.

It might actually be a tax decrease, or a revenue decrease.
If you raise minimum wage, those people will still be at poverty level and still will not be paying any tax,
in the meantime, taxable profits in the business sector will go down resulting in lower corporate taxes being paid
and, once inflation catches up with the new pay, the poverty level will have to be raised, those making over minimum wage, that are just above the poverty line might end up at poverty level now, resulting in not only them not paying tax, but also getting back the EIC of 4 grand.

People who identified themselves as agreeing with the tea party opposed the minimum wage measure 64% to 32%.

President Obama’s plan would raise the minimum wage and link additional increases to inflation. As we noted last week, the idea has met resistance among Republican lawmakers, who worry that it would add costs to businesses, which would then hire fewer workers.
