I'm glad my world is rosy too... even gladder because I'm the one who's responsible for it being rosy. I made the decision to leave a good job in Maryland and move to Florida with no home nor job because I was sick and tired of the taxes, fees, lack of opportunity for my kids, and gun laws in MD. I risked it all and moved to a place with no taxes, lower costs of living, my salary went from the mid-60s to over 100k, my wife found a job three miles from our house and she's now making good money, and my daughter's first job wasn't slinging fries at the Charlotte Hall McDonalds but working as a customer support specialist for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. I also came within two days of being evicted from my house last year when all of the hurricanes killed the car business that I was working at while I waited for a better job to open up. My world is rosy because I chose to make the difficult decisions and take on the risk of making it so.

I also moved to an area where I don't have to drive 80 miles for anything unless I'm going to the races at Daytona. My job, shopping, and entertainment are all within 25 miles of me. If you chose to live 80 miles from your job, that's your decision. If you choose to work a job that's 80 miles from your house because you can't afford to live any closer, that's your decision. If you decide that you just have to have a big SUV or truck to drive that 80 miles in, that's your decision. Just as choosing a job closer to home or moving closer to a job, and buying a fuel efficient car to drive 80 miles, is also your decision. You can sit there and bemoan the oil companies, the government, Santa, me, and anyone else you want for the situation you're in, but in the end it's you that got you where you are. I didn't like the situation I was in up there and I grabbed the proverbial bull horns and took accountability for my life, and vastly improved my situation, so forgive me for not feeling bad for people who get themselves into corners and then whine to be let out.

I will once again go back to the fact that you're mixing situations. Someone who's driving a bigassed SUV that's paying that $400 for gas, isn't someone who's going to get killed by paying $30 extra a week. Most people who are only making minimum wage aren't driving around in Expeditions, Tahoes, or Hummers. Most of the working-class folks I know are driving several year old small and mid-size cars, and aren't paying that extra $30 a week. And if someone decides to "buy all the house we can afford" in hopes of cashing in on the housing bubble, well, you pays your money and you takes your chances. That's a bad decision to make, as doing anything that leads you to live beyond your means usually is.

Sorry, but I can't cry for thee Argentina

Where did you get the idea I was having a problem? I commute 16.7 miles to work; make a good living, and drive a '95 Toyota commute car at 30+ per. But you nor I are the norm bud.
