Calvert States Attorney

I am just wondering why there hasn't been more discussion about this race. I would think that more people would be interested.

Looking at both of these candidates I wonder why anyone would even vote for Laura. I saw both ads in the WaPo SoMD section, and I will admit the Martin ad had a lot of content. But it didn't say anything. She isn't endorsed by anyone.

There are Republicans and Democrats supporting Wells. He has the Calvert FOP endorsement. When the judges had an oppurtunity to choose, they picked him.

I don't know much about the law. The people who do are picking Wells. Does anyone have a reason why I should pick Martin?

They both are masters of the plea bargain. This race should be more important than the Sheriff's contest if there were at least one good candidate. This is where Calvert County's crime problem is.

I don't understand what you mean by "masters of the plea bargain". Wouldn't that be just part of the process?

I mean, if they can put someone away with little to no effort, then why should they spend our money on an uncertain outcome.

Don't you read the news? Most of our violent criminals (in Calvert) have multiple NP's, plea bargains, or PBJ's. When do you finally get tired of lenient punishment for our violent offenders?

Case in point: both the victim and shooter in Solomon's a few weeks ago should have been in jail. Instead they were dealing, using, and shooting.

Unfortunately, neither candidate will do anything about this situation.

They are not put away.

Your response will probably be that the jails are full, tough luck for the offenders. Turn the stool over and now we can seat 4 in the place of one.

People are getting put away, plea bargain or not. Martin's big thing seems to be this one case where he plead out the offender to a three year sentence.

If you read the articles about it, you will realize that it was the best that could be done given the evidence and circumstances.

I would encourage everyone to do their research on the States Attorneys race and look at everything objectively.

My research points to Wells, I would encourage everyone to vote the same. The bottom line to me is the endorsements that Wells has received. The people who know about the law and the system, that we citizens don't always see, are for him. That speaks volumes to me.

Wells got the job as the current SA because Robert Riddle, the former SA was appointed to the bench. Laura Martin was Deputy SA but had to resign to run for SA. Wells fired employees who were pro-Martin and messed up a grand jury so bad it had to be redone. Pick the one who you think will do the best in protecting the county against crime-look beyond the endorsements and money. Do the research.

Based on my experience with the office that Wells has created, I'd vote for martin if I were registered to vote in this state. Never in my life have I seen more botched cases and poor excuses for State's attorneys as I have this year.

As far as the endorsements go, it's politics. If they all endorsed laura, and yet Wells still wins, how much support will Wells give the officers in court? One hand feeds another.

Do the research yourself. Go beyond what is advertised. Speak to folks that have had cases with the current states attorneys office. Go sit in the court room and listen to some cases that are heard, particularly those dealing with Domestic Violence and protection orders.

In my opinion, a change is needed in Calvert. I'm urging folks to vote for Martin.
