'Deception': Christians war over worship day

This sign at the Mesa Avenue Church of Christ in Grand Junction, Colo., is typical of churches announcing their worship services on Sunday.

Two thousand years after Jesus walked the Earth, Christians are at war with each other concerning – as strange as it may sound – a day of the week mentioned in the Ten Commandments.

The issue boils down to: "When is God's Sabbath?" In other words, what is His holy day of rest?


Most Christians today think it's Sunday, when the majority of churches hold services.

But others confidently say it's Saturday, calling Sunday worship "the most flagrant error of mainstream Christianity," believing Sunday-keepers are victims of clever deception.

I used to go to a church that explained it about as simply as possible.

The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week. By Jewish reckoning, Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. Period. The name itself means to rest or cease, in honor of God's creation after six days.

The Lord's Day - the day people met to break bread - is the same as the day of the week Jesus rose - the first day of the week. Period.

There's really no way of confusing it - even if you go sundown to sundown for the Sabbath, you just don't get any part of it on Sunday.

I've heard people claim that Sunday is the "Christian" Sabbath. And therein hangs the tale - they're claiming that somehow it got "moved".

But Christians don't HAVE a "Sabbath". In fact, it's really just tradition to meet on the Lord's Day. There's no particular reason why it couldn't be held any day.

As logically as I can see it, anyone who claims that Sunday is the Sabbath is wrong twice, because it's not Sunday, and Christians don't celebrate it.

What does the Bible say regarding the Sabbath and the day of regard for Christians?

Matthew 12:1-13

All days should be considered holy in the life of a believer and we are to be in constant communication with God (personal prayer and worship) throughout the week - not just any one certain day.

but according to many european/south american calendars, the first day of the week is Monday.

Holy Mass is celebrated every day, excepting a day off for the priest if there is only one at a parish.
Jesus did say that every time we celebrate the Lord's Supper we commemorate His Sacrifice. Seems good to do it daily.
